  3. The Kitchen Design Process • The design process is broken down into two separate and often conflicting elements FUNCTION v AESTHETICS

  4. FUNCTION • Step .1 Needs Analysis Your brief to the designer will determine how succesful your kitchen is • Step .2 Space Limitations Can you move / remove walls, extend out, change rooms? • Step .3 Use zonal principles Building blocks / template for starting your layout • Step .4 Balance with aesthetics All best designs are a compromise between function & aesthetics

  5. AESTHETICS There are three distinct styles in kitchen design and your preference will determine what design rules you apply. • CONTEMPORARY • HYBRID • CLASSIC

  6. CONTEMPORARY KITCHENS Key Principles Horizontal emphasis Blend with structure Eliminate wall cabinets

  7. HYBRID KITCHENS Key Principles Solid wood / painted doors No cornice, pelmet or pillars Usually mix of two colours This style is particularly suited to older houses that want a fresh / modern Kitchen but are afraid a full-on contemporary design would look wrong.

  8. CLASSIC KITCHENS Key Principles Vertical emphasis Framed sections High cornice + pillars
