  1. Professional Development in Science Processing Scientific Data February 2014

  2. Learning Goal Investigate a model of instruction to engage students in scientific inquiry. Success Criterion Create a plan to purposefully spiral scientific processes into current lesson plans.

  3. Intentional Science Conversation

  4. Question Focus Capture the students’ interest and provide them with a reason to design and carry out an investigation. Get students to ASK QUESTIONS!!! Reaction Time

  5. How QUICK are you? Will using the non-preferred hand affect reaction time? Or Download one of the free apps – search “Reaction Time”

  6. Experiment and Collect Data Variation: Give students sets of data

  7. Give Students a Set of Data

  8. Analyze and Explain the Data • Make sense of the data collected and develop a conclusion based on evidence. • Create a display to include the question, the claim, the support, and the explanation.

  9. Simple but Effective This graphic organizer helps students WRITE a conclusion!!! The Question: Will using the non-preferred hand affect reaction time? The Claim The Support (Insert Data) The Explanation (Include Data and Research)

  10. Share Data and Explanation Shift 4: Read, write and discuss text based evidence • students share their arguments and critique the arguments of their classmates. • each team has an opportunity to revise their arguments in order to make them better.

  11. Write an Investigation report Format could be a graphic organizer, paragraph, power point, etc. Goal of the investigation or Hypothesis Methods used during the investigation to collect data Final Argument or Conclusion Shift 5: Write from multiple sources

  12. Increase Rigor in Assessments

  13. PLC Suggestion • Identify areas where you can add more data processing lessons. • Share one of your best resources for collecting data or obtaining data sets • Set a goal to add one data processing activity this monthand try it! Next month share your experience.
