Differentiate OCS and Direct Select • Officer Candidate School • Eligibility requirements • Chapter 1, AR 350-51 • MILPER Message 08-313 • Sent to HRC to be boarded by Accessions Branch • Direct Select Program • Same basic eligibility requirements as regular OCS packets plus: • No waivers • Include a General Officers endorsement • Will not undergo a board by the Accessions Branch; they are sent to HRC to be Branched • General Officer Commanders may select up to 20 Eligible Soldiers during the remainder of FY 09 and the first Quarter of FY 10 • The selecting General Officer must personally endorse the applications • CG, 82nd has set a quota of 5 DS packets per quarter

OCS Eligibility Requirements (1 of 3) • United States citizen • GT Score = 110 or higher • SAT score of 850 / ACT score of 19 or a Baccalaureate Degree or higher • Pass APFT and meet height and weight standards of AR 600-9 • Secret Clearance • 90 semester hours from accredited college • Complete a bachelors degree in 1 year or less (except for Medal of Honor or Distinguished Service Cross recipients)

OCS Eligibility Requirements (2 of 3) • 80 or higher on the (ECLT) English Comprehension Test/(ALCPT) American Language Course Placement Test (If applicants primary language is other than English must score) • Good moral character • Cannot be flagged • No convictions (Adult or Juvenile). (This does not apply to minor traffic violations with a fine or forfeiture of $250.00 or less) • Have not been previously disenrolled from OCS training • Between the ages of 18 and 38* years of age at time of enrollment • Aviation Branch, must not have reached their 30th Birthday * • Completed AIT (Enlisted Personnel)

OCS Eligibility Requirements (3 of 3) • Completed AIT (Enlisted Personnel) • Type “A” medical examination within 9 months of the date of the application • NMT 10 years of active Federal service when appointed as a Commissioned Officer • All applicants will attend a structured local board, to include Direct Select Applicants * • Prior to being interviewed, each applicant will complete a written essay indicating “Why I want to be an Army Officer” * * Recent Updates

OCS Board/Structured Interviews Purpose: The purpose of the structured interview board is to identify the degree to which the applicant has developed attributes that show potential for a successful career as a professional Army commissioned officer. Concept: The applicant’s past behavior in a variety of situation’s is evaluated to predict future performance.

Board Documents • Documents prepared by the Board Attendees: • Handwritten narrative stating “Why I Want to be an Army Officer” • Evaluate the applicant’s writing and ability to express a desire to serve as a commissioned officer • Documents provided to the Board Panel for review: • Complete OCS packets for each board attendee • DA Forms 6285 • Note Paper • Documents to be prepared by the Board Panel members: • DA Form 6285 • Any notes the interviewers record on their forms must be legible and understandable since the installation commander, the MACOM commander, and the PERSCOM OCS Selection Board will review them. Rationale for ratings of higher than “4” or lower than “3” must be clearly stated on the DA Form 6285. Completed DA Form 6285 will be attached to the OCS application. On the “Targeted Dimensions” page, each interviewer will also include a written statement on whether Soldier is or is not recommended for OCS training.

  12. Board President Guidance • Focus on demonstrated performance, experience and potential to lead • Board is not a test or forum to "grill and drill" the candidate • Painting an accurate picture of the individual in 20-30 mins
