  1. Bell Ringer Learning Target: I can determine if a relation is a function. Use f(x)=2x +4 f(3) = f(-5)= f(x)=10

  2. Relations and Functions

  3. Vocabulary • Relation—set of ordered pairs Ex: (x,y) • Domain—set of first coordinates of the ordered pairs (x’s) • Range—set of second coordinates of the ordered pairs (y’s)

  4. Examples Ex: (4,3) (-2,1) (-1,3) (4,-2) (-1,1) Domain – {-2, -1, 4} Range – {-2, 1, 3} Ex: (5,2) (3,-1) (2,5) (-2,-5) (4,-2) Domain – {-2, 2, 3, 4, 5} Range – {-5, -2, -1, 2, 5}

  5. Vocabulary • Function—a relation that assigns exactly one value in the range to each value in the domain • Vertical Line Test—way to tell if relation is a function

  6. Which one is not a function? A. B. D. C.
