  1. Root Servers Activity Why? • It started from a Sept 12th analysis… • Can we also make it safe for this extreme situations? • We are Technical guys… think of a solution. • … but we also lobby policies… think of a proposal • Situation is "static"…

  2. Root Servers Activity What? • Examine current root servers distribution • 10 USA, 2 Europe, 1 Japan • A) place/move one more to Europe inside GEANT • B) help/experiment the "anycast" proposal • C) support proposal to evolve from current standby

  3. Root Servers Activity How (traditional)? • GEANT is an "innovative" Interchange Point • Place one traditional root-server in one of the core PoPs • Analysis of technical, administrative and financial issues • Remotely operated (like the London one)

  4. Root Servers Activity How (innovative)? • Experiment the "anycast" on the field • Experiment to non-BIND solution • Experiment Security issues of the solution • "we can afford experiments", can commercials? • … many unknown issues until we try.

  5. Root Servers Activity How (policy)? • Is there any chance the R&D community can help moving the issue in ICANN "out of the paddock"? • Community support to new initiatives in the field of "securing the Internet" can help… • Is it worth in this field? Still investigating…

  6. Root Servers Activity An OPEN small informal wg is thinking about the above questions, in order to prepare an extensive report and proposal. Contributions are welcome…

  7. Root Servers Activity … well… the issue scored the "record messages per day" on the GA mailing list, thus it seems interesting.
