  2. 768: he and his brother Carloman inherit the kingdom of the Franks • 771: Carloman dies, and Charlemagne becomes King of the Franks in 768 AD ruler. • In the meantime… • …the Franks were neglecting their education and religion… • …the Saxons of northern Europe were still pagans… • …in the south, the Roman Catholicchurch was trying to re-establish its power… Europe was in turmoil!
