  1. The family is our refuge and springboard...our link to the past, our bridge to the future. -Alex Haley, author Families

  2. Create a definition for family

  3. There are four main kinds of family groups: the nuclear family, the extended family, the single-parent family, and the blended family. Types of Families

  4. The Nuclear Family • A Nuclear family is a family group with two generations-a father and mother and at least one child-sharing the same household.

  5. The Extended Family • An extended family is a family group that includes relatives other than parents and children within a single household. Ex. A woman raises her two grandsons.

  6. The Single-Parent Family • A single-parent family is a group that consists of one parent and one or more children sharing a household. The parent in this type of family may be either a mother or father.

  7. A blended family is a family group that consists of a married couple and at least one child from a parent's previous relationship. The Blended Family

  8. When I was a boy of fourteen, my father was so ignorant I could hardly stand to have the old man around. But when I got to be twenty-one, I was astonished at how much the old man had learned in seven years. - Mark Twain, author

  9. Values are the beliefs and principles that are based on the ideas about what is right, good, and desirable. Individuals and families decide which values are important to them. These values may vary from one person or family to another. Families Teach Values

  10. Values are first learned within the family. Families are responsible for their members’ moral development- by teaching values that belong in a person’s moral code. These lessons are passed along to children, who eventually pass them along to their children Learning Values

  11. In what ways does your value system become apparent to others? What is the basis for a moral code? Why do adults need to express their values to children? Your Values
