Where the College Came From • Named after George Brown, a Father of Confederation and founder of “The Globe” (later the Globe and Mail), George Brown College was originally established as a community college in 1967. • To create the College, the Provincial Institute of Trades, Provincial Institute of Trades and Occupations, Adult Basic Education courses from the Toronto Board of Education, and the schools of Nursing from a number of Toronto hospitals, were merged. • For more history information please go to: http://www.georgebrown.ca/about/history/

  12. Employment Packages • You should have received a new hire package (e-documents, hyperlink, or hardcopy) at the time of hire. The following documents are included in a new hire package. • NOTE: If you did not receive these documents, please call the Human Resources Department at ext. 4446. • Additional copies of the Support and Academic Collective Agreement can be obtained from the Council’s website: www.TheCouncil.on.ca. Conditions of employment are outlined within your Offer Letter.

  13. Pay Information • Pay is directly deposited to your specified bank account bi-weekly. • Payment to non full-time staff is deferred by two weeks. To see the part-time pay schedule go to: https://insite/finance/default.asp • Payment to full-time staff is up to the day. To see the full-time pay schedule go to: https://insite/finance/default.asp • NOTE: if you have expenses that fall under the appropriate categories for payment by the College, an expense statement must be submitted to Payroll. Pay Deductions • There are a number of deductions that are mandatory for full time staff - income tax, pension, E.I., CPP, union dues, etc., but you may also elect to have other funds deducted. • These elective deductions may include direct deposit to the Credit Union, additional health and insurance coverage, RRSP payments, and charity or computer purchases plan (see bookstore for details). • Human Resources will discuss these options with you.

Benefits, Pension & Compensation • Once you have accepted a full-time position at GBC, you will be contacted to make an appointment with Human Resources. • At that meeting, you will sign up for benefits and pension. We will discuss the co-ordination of any existing benefits, and you will be given benefit details and informed of any waiting periods that may be in effect. • Health insurance:Please note you must be registered with OHIP to be eligible for any extended health benefits.   16. Need Some Help? – Employee Assistance Program • A voluntary, confidential, counselling and information service for full-time GBC employees and their families. The College pays for these services. No identifying information is reported to the College. • The program is designed to help you with personal or work-related problems, pressures and stress before they lead to more serious difficulties. • For first time appointments andcounselling call (toll-free, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week): 1-800-387-4765 • You can also access these services at http://www.warrenshepell.com/.

College Policies Continued • AODA Policy: The newly updated amalgamated AODA policy aims to support an inclusive environment in the provision of goods, services or facilities to the College Community in accordance with our obligations under the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act, 2005. • Captioned Media & E-Text Policy: This policy aims to support an inclusive academic environment by incorporating universal design concepts that reduce or remove barriers for individuals with diverse learning abilities. All media resources used by faculty and staff will be purchased with either closed or open captioning while textbooks and other print materials must be available in electronic format to facilitate accessibility in multiple formats such as Braille, large print and digital audio. • Accessible Event Guidelines: Please click on the link for a complete checklist of rules and regulations for hosting an accessible event. • Sexual Assault and Sexual Violence Policy and Protocol : All members of the George Brown College community have a right to work and study in an environment that is free from any form of sexual violence. This policy and protocol sets out the way in which we address sexual violence. It ensures that those affected by sexual violence are believed and appropriately accommodated and ensures that the College has a process of investigation that protects the rights of individuals and holds individuals who have committed an act of sexual violence accountable.

Mandatory Training In accordance with the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (2005), Accessibility Standards for Customer Service Standard and the Integrated Accessibility Standards Regulation all employees, volunteers, contractors or others who provide goods, services or facilities on behalf of the college are obligated by law to complete the following training: • Accessibility Standards for Customer Service Training. You may access the training by going to this link: http://www.georgebrown.ca/AODA/Training/ . Select the appropriate employee group and begin the training. Upon completion you will be asked to fill in your name on a certificate form which will be sent directly to the AODA Coordinator and Staff Development indicating that you have completed the training. • If you are an educator as defined in the AODA, Integrated Accessibility Standards Regulation, [Definition: educators: employees who are involved in course design, delivery and instruction], you must also complete the Accessibility Awareness Training for Educators located on ‘My Learning’ on Cornerstone: Click on this link to login. The training will be made available on your My Learning Transcript and upon completion you will be asked to indicate that you have read and understood the training material. Completion of training is required by law and is now a condition of employment at the College. Privacy & Freedom of Information Respecting the privacy and confidentiality of personal information is important to George Brown College. • Staff and student information must be dealt with carefully. In general, all personal information is confidential. • Only the student has the right to see their marks. When posting marks, you must take special care not to use an identifier that will allow anyone other than the student to identify to whom the marks belong. • If you have access to the BANNER registration system, all information is confidential and available to you only on a need-to-know basis.   26. When is the College Closed? • The College only closes when conditions make it too dangerous for students and staff to reach the College. Since we are located on TTC routes, we are generally closed on fewer occasions than colleges in outlying areas. • For information about whether the college is closed or classes are cancelled, you can: • Call:416-415-5000 or toll-free 1-800-265-2002 • Check the Web:Updates will be posted on www.georgebrown.ca on a regular basis. • Listen to the radio or TV:George Brown will notify radio and TV stations if the college is closed due to bad weather.

  31. Supporting the College Green Plan RECYCLE • Use hallway bins to recycle paper, cans, bottles and fine paper • At the start of class remind students to recycle properly • Discourage students from bringing food into classrooms. • Recycle batteries at Campus First Aid Offices.

Supporting the College Green Plan REDUCE AND REUSE • Use your own mug and save 10 cents on your next cup of coffee at Tim Horton’s and Chartwells. • Bring your own reusable water bottle. • Think before you print and only print double sided. • Turn off lights and equipment when you leave the office.

  38. Booking Rooms, Equipment, Supplies and Materials • Check with your departmental assistant for supplies and materials. Classrooms often lack chalk, so it is wise to make sure you have a supply. • Most classrooms have an overhead projector and screen. Other A/V equipment can be booked through the ITAC at your campus: • Casa Loma Campus (RM C234-ITAC) • St. James Campus (RM 375C) • Center for Financial Services Education (RM 130) • Waterfront Campus (Room 330) http://www.georgebrown.ca/itac/

  40. “Smart” Classrooms • There are many "smart" classrooms which have built-in video/data projection systems, sound systems where necessary, and an internet connection. They are part of the regular classroom pool at both Casa Loma and St. James campuses. • When scheduling information is submitted by the divisions before each term begins, a "smart" room may be requested if class activities require the use of specialized equipment. Otherwise, they are timetabled according to class size. • For “smart” classroom training, please visit Organizational & Staff Development for information.

  41. Booking Meeting Rooms • Boardrooms can be booked for meetings at the various campuses. • All departments have boardrooms (varying seating capacity & technology). To book boardrooms please contact the front desk (receptionist/admin assistant) for each department. • Check with campus manager’s office for other rooms

Textbooks • Check with your departmental assistant or contact the Bookstore at ext. 2665. • Choices of textbooks must be approved by your department Chair or Coordinator. • An e-text copy of the course textbook should be made available to any student who requires one. All e-texts should be ordered as early as possible. If one is not available it will require a few weeks to have one audio taped for accessibility purposes.

  43. eTextbooks • The Institutional Buy eTextbook program at GBC provides access to all students in a class with Accessible textbooks. Costs of the eTextbook are included in Materials-Fee. • The selection of textbooks must be approved by the Department Chair or Coordinator. Requests for these resources must be submitted by your chair on the material’s fee form, due October 31st in the preceding academic year. • If you require additional assistance regarding provision of an accessible textbook both the Librarians and Accessible Learning Services can provide further direction. • For more information contact your departmental assistant or the Bookstore.

  44. Photocopying and Printing • Photocopiers are located throughout each college campus. Access to the machines is by a departmental code and your department may have a particular machine assigned to it. Check with your department assistant for access. • Photocopiers are to be used for small runs of material only. George Brown is part of a consortium of community colleges that use the services of Grenville on Campus. Printing requests must be filled out on a printing request form, available from your departmental secretary or administrative assistant.

  45. Xerox Print Centre • Xerox maintains a walk-in print shops St. James, Casa Loma and Waterfront Campuses, offering a variety of printing and duplication services. • They also handle special printing requests, such as binding, posters, shrink-wrapping, etc. • It is best to make your printing requests at least a week to ten days in advance of the date required. During high-demand times, such as the few weeks before classes start, printing turnaround time may be significantly delayed. Xerox Print Centre - List of Services

  46. Submitting Marks • Check with your department office to determine which system is used. In some cases, marks may be submitted via your Department office. • Enter grades directly using FAST (Millennium) • https://fast.georgebrown.ca/ • You can go directly to FAST from Blackboard by clicking on the “Enter Grades” on the left had navigation bar • Consult with your department if you have any questions.

  49. Help Desk • Our Help Desk is run by iProcess, an IT service provider associated with GE Capital. To access this round the clock service dial ext 4357 (HELP) or email helpdesk@georgebrown.ca • The analyst will attempt to fix the problem with you over the phone. If this is not possible they will obtain additional information and arrange for a GBC IT staff member to repair the problem in person. • You will be given a case number to check on the status of the service request or to give additional information.

  50. MS Exchange • The College uses Outlook and MS Exchange for its e-mail service. Once your e-mail account is set up, you may also access your e-mail at home through the web. To do so, use the following url: http://mail.georgebrown.ca/ • Once you have accessed the post server, it will ask you to enter your user name and your password.
