  1. Dust Accelerator: Review of Plan • 3 MeV dust accelerator • Particle sizes: 0.2 – 2.5 m • Particle velocities: < 100 km/s • Large test chamber • UV sources • Solar wind simulator • Various targets • Small (UHV) test chamber • Microphysics diagnostics • Additional 20 kV ‘mini’ accelerator • Prototype dust head, detectors, etc.

  2. Pelletron in NPL high bay

  3. Nuclear Physics Laboratory Status • Office Space • Repainted 12 offices + lab/sample-prep areas • Students presently working at NPL • Two electronics labs set up so far • High Bay • Power installed (Pelletron, pumps, lamps, etc.) • Compressed air installed (incl. compressor) • Water lines installed (no chiller yet) • All work so far from Facilities Management (not CCLDAS project budget)

  4. Nuclear Physics Laboratory Status • Crane • New CU effort to bring campus to OSHA standards • $150k from Provost funds to refurbish NPL crane • Electrical power & Mechanical / bearings • Soft start/stop • Remote control • Remaining NPL items (near term) • Rework last few offices • Set up videoconferencing system in library • Finish data lines to high bay • Water chiller • Minor electrical work

  5. Pelletron Bid Status • University RFP process nearing completion • One bid received [National Electrostatics / Pelletron] • Lead-time is now 16 months!

  6. Accelerator Beamline

  7. Beamline Mechanical Structure

  8. Subcomponents Underway • Detector mechanical fab. CU Physics shop • Dust-head mechanical fab. CU Physics shop • Detector circuitry Evan Thomas (thanks to Gunter Matt) • Beamline mechanical fab.Spencer Leblanc • PSU logic Tyler Wingfield • Pulser & HV electronics Mike Wagner & Anthony Shu • Fiber-optic readout/control M. Wagner & A. Shu • SimIon / focusing electrodeMatt Zemel

  9. Small (20 kV) Accelerator • Designed in parallel with large beamline • Components being ordered now • Electronics built in parallel with large accelerator versions • Should be complete/operational in Fall

  10. Near-term Action Items • Get Pelletron order out the door • Beamline hardware • Once HV unit is ordered, beamline can be constructed • NPL facility items from previous slide • Bring up small accelerator as quickly as possible
