  3. What Brings God Sorrow? • The rebellion of sin, Gen. 6:5-7 • Evil thoughts and motives • Turning back from obeying Him, 1 Sam. 15:11 • Unwillingness to yield to God’s purposes, Matt. 23:37-38 • Hardened hearts, Mark 3:1-5

  4. What Brings God Sorrow? • When faithful ones are sorrowful, John 11:32-36 • Personal pain and loss • Tears of compassion for those who fear Him, Psa. 103:13-14

  5. Intensity of God’s Sorrow • “Very sorrowful” when we choose other things than Him, Luke 18:24 • God disciplines us to teach us and help us correct ourselves, Heb. 12:11 • God corrects us as parents correct children, Prov. 13:24; 19:18 • Through trials, Heb. 12:3-4, 5-6

  6. Intensity of God’s Sorrow • God’s heart hurts when we choose to walk in sin, Gen. 6:6-7 • Grieved (6:6): To hurt, to have pain, Jer. 9:1 • Sorry (6:7): Regret, a change of mind

  7. Goodness and Severity of God • Goodness: His sorrow over our sins prompts His mercy, Mark 3:5 • Redemption in Christ • God takes no pleasure in the death of sinners! Ezek. 18:32; Eph. 2:4-5 • Grand expression of love, Rom. 5:8

  8. Goodness and Severity of God • Severity: God’s sorrow over our sins will not prevent His punishment of unrepented sins, Gen. 6:11-13; Jer. 9:7-16 • Justice of God • Against the rebellious, 1 Sam. 15:23, 28-29, 35 • Hardened against Him and His word, Prov. 29:1; Zech. 7:12

  9. The Sorrow of God • God is grieved when… • We ignore Him • We rebel against Him • We choose other things • We harden ourselves • In love, He offers us mercy in His Son • He disciplines us to help turn sorrow into joy

  10. The Sorrow of God • Are you bringing God sorrow or joy? Lam. 3:31-33, 37-42 • God shows the path of life to fullness of joy, Psa. 16:11; Rev. 21:4 • “Enter into the joy of your Lord” (Matt. 25:21)
