  1. 8 – Ecology Vocab and Biochemical Cycles

  2. Objective SWBAT 1. Analyze vocabulary terms IOT identify levels of ecosystem organization. 2. Analyze biochemical cycles IOT describe their roles in an ecosystem

  3. Organism • An organism is a living specimen that is a member of a specific species.

  4. Population • A population is a group of individuals of the same species that live in the same area.

  5. Community • A community is a grouping of different populations that live together in a defined area.

  6. Ecosystem • An ecosystem is the collection of all of the organisms in a particular place, combined with the nonliving environment.

  7. Carbon Cycle • involves the processes of respiration and photosynthesis. • In respiration, oxygen and glucose are combined releasing energy and producing water and carbon dioxide. • In photosynthesis water and carbon dioxide along with the energy from the sun are combined to produce glucose (containing energy) and oxygen. • Each process compliments the other and the ecosystem maintains its balanced communities.

  8. Cellular Respiration Equation • C6H12O6 + 6O2 -> 6CO2 + 6H20 + Energy Carbon Dioxide Glucose ATP Oxygen Water Reactants Products

  9. Cellular Respiration & Photosynthesis • 6O2 + C6H12O6 → 6CO2 + 6H2O + Energy • oxygen + glucose  carbon dioxide + water + Energy • 6CO2 + 6H2O +light energyC6H12O6 +6O2 • carbon dioxide + water  sugars + oxygen

  10. 6CO2 + 6H2O +light  C6H12O6+6O2 • 6O2 + C6H12O66CO2 + 6H2O + Energy

  11. Nitrogen cycle • Nitrates (used by plants) • Build plant proteins • Eaten by animals • made into animal proteins • Plants and animals die • bacteria decay • Ammonia (NH3) • Nitrifying Bacteria • Nitrates (used by plants)

  12. Water Cycle • involves the processes of photosynthesis, transpiration, evaporation and condensation, precipitation, and runoff and groundwater movement

  13. Take the Quiz! LQ 8!!
