The Children's Advocacy Center of Grand Traverse and Leelanau counties and the Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians is dedicated to the identification, treatment, awareness and prevention of the sexual and physical abuse of children. Our mission is to protect children by providing prevention and multi-disciplinary intervention in investigation, assessment and treatment of child sexual and physical abuse in an environment that is child-sensitive, supportive and safe.

  3. The TBCAC is…. “Comprehensive, child-focused program in a facility that allows law enforcement, child protection, prosecution, mental health and medical providers to work together to most effectively handle child sexual abuse cases.”

Who do we serve? • Victims of sexual and other severe physical abuse and neglect • Children ages 3 through 17 • Vulnerable adults 18 years and older • Referrals from Law Enforcement & CPS • Non-offending family members of victims • Greater Grand Traverse region • Grand Traverse County • Leelanau County • Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa & Chippewa Indians

  6. “Help” begins when victims are empowered to “tell”… • A Multi-Disciplinary Team (MDT) works to provide victims and their families: • A coordinated approach to Law enforcement and Protective Services investigations • Skilled forensic interviewing of victims • Trauma-informed medical and mental health interventions • Court preparation and support • On-going follow-up throughout the criminal prosecution and healing processes

  7. What is TF-CBT? A hybrid treatment model that integrates: • Trauma sensitive interventions • Cognitive-behavioral principles • Attachment theory • Developmental neurobiology • Family therapy • Empowerment therapy • Humanistic therapy

Treatment Research • TF-CBT is the most rigorously tested treatment for traumatized children • 12 randomized trials, numerous follow-ups • Current RCT for DV • Improved PTSD, depression, anxiety, shame and behavior problems compared to supportive treatments • PTSD improved more with direct child treatment • Improved parental distress, parental support, and parental depression compared to supportive treatment

  10. Cultural Sensitivity & Competence • Essential to understand family’s values related to religion, ethnicity & culture • Previous treatment outcome studies found TF-CBT to be successful with diverse ethnic and racial populations (Cohen et al., 2001)
