  1. Angles and Sourcing How would you approach a story on…Who would you approach for a story about…

  2. Weird School Policy On Sunscreen Results In Horribly Sunburned Children Two little girls in Tacoma, Washington came home with terrible sunburns after their school wouldn’t let them apply sunblock during field day. Violet and Zoe Michener, 11 and 9, were victims of a state/public school policy on sunscreen that says students cannot apply sunscreen without a doctor’s note.

  3. Angle – point, focus or theme of a news or feature story Possible angles for this incident? School policies that endanger ( and do not protect) students? How laws shackle schools (related to liability)? The harmful short and long-term effects associated with sun exposure (especially as it relates to children)? Parent vs. school responsibility?

  4. How about those sources? Primary? The little girls Secondary? Mom? School administration? School nurses? Professional? Dermatologists? Attorneys? Oncologists? Person-on-the-Street? Random people, obviously Physical ? Board policies? Education law documents? Product information sheets?

  5. YOUR TURN • Select a partner • Select a topic • Identify a story angle • Compile a list of sources • Compile a list of questions for EACH source
