  8. Chemistry: • General Chemistry I: CHM 101 and CHM 102 • General Chemistry II: CHM 112 and CHM 114 • Routes you can take for organic chemistry: • Intro Organic Chemistry with lab and Biochemistry: CHM 124 and CHM 126 in addition to BCH 311 OR • Organic Chemsitry I and II with lab: CHM 227, CHM 228 and CHM 226 • I recommend getting your chemistry course load done as soon as you can, that way you can devote the latter part of your college career to taking fun marine biology classes!

  9. Physics • PHY 111 and PHY 185 (lab) • PHY 112 and PHY 186 (lab) • Most people take this later into their college career, but the important thing to consider are your math skills as these classes are heavily equation based.

  10. Oceanography • Take this junior or senior year • OCG 401 OR • OCG 451

  11. Core Requirments: • Total of 13 credits: • General Bio I and II: BIO 101, 102 • Topics in Marine Biology: BIO 130 • Marine Biology: BIO 360 • MUST TAKE THESE CLASSES.

  12. Core Courses: You get to some what choose these • MUST CHOOSE 1 COURSE FROM 4 OF THE 6 CATEGORIES (MIN. 12 CR) • CELL AND DEVELOPMENT: BIO 302, 311, 341, 453 • ECOLOGY AND EVOLUTION: BIO 262, 272 • GENETICS: BIO 352 • MOLECULAR BIO: BIO 437 • ORGANISMAL DIVERSITY: BIO 304, 321, 323, 354, 365, 366, 412; MIC 211 • PHYSIOLOGY: BIO 201, 346 • Typically, students take BIO 262 (especially if planning on Bermuda) after they’ve taken BIO 101 and 102 as a stepping-stone to prepare for the tougher core classes. • These courses are where you will to start thinking about what you’re really interested in! • It is good to take micro (bio 437), cell bio (bio 341) or genetics (bio 352)!

  13. Marine Bio Electives: The fun stuff! • Marine Environmental Physiology (BIO 345) • Marine Invertebrates of Southern New England (BIO 355) • Evolution and Diversity of Fishes (BIO 412) • Ecology of Marine Plants (BIO 418) • Deep Sea Biology (OCG 420) • Environmental Physiology of Animals (BIO 441) • Marine Ecology (BIO 455 • Marine Ecology Laboratory (BIO 457) • Biology of Algae (BIO 365) • Tropical Marine Invertebrates (BIO 469)* • Coral Reef Ecology (BIO 475)* • Directed Research/Special Problems (AFS, AVS, BCH, BIO, MIC, NRS, and PLS 491, 492; BIO 495*; OCG 493, 494) • Tropical Marine Biology Research (BIO 495)* • Seminar on Marine Mammals (AVS 440) • Ichthyology (BIO 563) • Marine Microbiology (OCG 576) **Classes only offered in Bermuda

  14. Important Points: • You must fulfill the lab course requirement! • Take AT LEAST 2 courses from either the Marine Bio Cores or Electives that have labs. • You may use UP TO 3 credits of independent research/study toward the major • You need 120 credits to graduate…that means you should take at least 15 credits/semester to graduate on time! • You will have room for free electives, so utilize to take classes that interest and you and to get a minor (only 18 credits!)
