  1. HURO/0901/1472.2.2Szeged-Timisoara axisfor the safe food and feedSZETISA1 MacroelementsintheRomanianwheatgenotypes. Effects of Fusariuminfectiononmacroelementconcentrationsinmaizegenotypes Erdei László, Vashegyi Ágnes, Pető Andrea Department of PlantBiology University of Szeged 3rd Progress Report Meeting Timisoara, 26-27 January, 2012 DisclaimerThe content of this page does not necessarily represent the official position of the European Union.

  2. MacroelementsintheRomanianwheatgenotypes Sampleswerecollectedfrom 13 localitiesin Timis and Arad counties: Manastur – TM Sanandrei – TM Faget - TM Pietroasa - TM Lovrin – TM Aldesti – TM DudestiiVechi – TM Horea - AR Siria – AR Recas – AR Semlac – AR Paulis – AR Barzava – AR Ripenearswereseparatedintograins and chaff. K, Ca and Mg weredeterminedinbothpartsbyatomicabsortionspectrophotometer (Hitachi Z-8200)

  3. K concentrations (µmolK/g DM)

  4. Caconcentrations (µmolCa/g DM)

  5. Mg concentrations (µmolMg/g DM)

  6. Conclusions Potassiumconcentrationsweresimilarinthegrain, inBarzava and Fagetslightlyhigher. Ingarain and chaff K levelsnearequal, butinsomecasesingrainit is higherorlower. Calciumconcentrationsare 2 to 3-fold higherinchaffthaningrains. Ingrains, no fluctuationwasobserved. Magnesiumconcentrationsare 2-fold higheringrainscomparedtotoseinthechaff. The highest Mg concentrationsingrainswerefountatBarzavaand Aldesti. It is notknownwhetherthedifferencesaretheconsequences of thegentypeortheagricultural site.

  7. Macroelementconcentrations inFusarium-infectedmaizegenotypes Fromfieldexperiments of Prof. Mesterházy Ákos, Cereal Research Nonprofit Ltd. Maizegenotypes ZeamaysL. cv. Sarolta – Fusariumresistant Zeamays L. cv. Boglár – more sensitive Fusariuminoculates Fusariumgraminearum (Fg), F. culmorum (Fc), F. verticillioides (Fv) Infection: 8-10 daysafterflowering, withmycelia, usingtoothpick Experimental design: 3 rowsin3siteswithrepetitiverows of control and the 3 Fusariumstrains. Fromeachrow 3 ears (withhusks) and theleavesbeneathwerecollected.

  8. Effects of Fusariuminfectionon K concentrationinmaizekernels(fromthemiddle part of thecob). Comparison of twosamplingdates and 3 Fusarium species (Fg, Fc, Fv) in 2 maizegenotypes. Mean +- S.D., n = 9.

  9. Effects of FusariuminfectiononCaconcentrationinmaizekernels(fromthemiddle part of thecob). Comparison of twosamplingdates and 3 Fusarium species (Fg, Fc, Fv) in 2 maizegenotypes. Mean+- S.D., n= 9.

  10. Effects of Fusariuminfectionon Mg concentrationinmaizekernels(fromthemiddle part of thecob). Comparison of twosamplingdates and 3 Fusarium species (Fg, Fc, Fv) in 2 maizegenotypes. Mean+- S.D., n= 9.

  11. Conclusions Elementconcentrations (K, Ca, Mg) werehigherintheinfectedkernelscomparedtothecontrol. Increaseinelementconcentrationswasproportionaltothetimepassedafterinoculation. Fist samlingdatewas 8-10 daysafterinculation, thesecondone 3 weakslater, atharvest. Bythattimetheinfectionwasmaximal and thekernelsshrivelled. Intensity of infectiondependedontheFusarium species. Most agressivewasF. graminearum, followedbyF. culmorum and F. verticillioides.

  12. Elementconcentrationgradientsalongmaizeears (base, middle, apex), incontrol and infectedsamples

  14. Volume (and surface) relations of control and Fusarium – infectedmaizekernels Control - 36 kernels 10 g Infected -80 kernels 10 g

  18. Conclusions Incontrol, non-infectedearstheelementconcentrationswerenearthesameinthekernelstakenfromthebasal, middleorapical part of theear. Inthedgnotype Sarolta, K concentrationslightlyincreased, whereasCa and Mg slightlydecereasedalongtheearfrombasetoapex. Attheinfectedmiddleparttheconcentrations of alltheelementsincrreased. The enhancementwasprportionalwiththeagression of theFusarium species, inthesameorder, asbefore. Concentrationvalueswerecalculatedon unit massbasis. Sincetheinfectedkernelshavemuch less massthanconntrolones, per unit masstheycontainelargernumber of kernelsthanthecontrolsample. The higherelementconcentrationsintheinfectedsamplesthusare du tothelargersurfacearea of thekernels and/ortheremainingtissueswheretheseelementsarelovalized.
