Stand Up Portable Desk

It is a fact that sitting for long periods of time is not good for the body. It cannot be avoided though because for most of us, our work keeps us on our desk. It’s a good thing then that there are stand-up desks that allow us to do our work yet remain standing at the same time.

  2. WHY IS SITTING TOO MUCH BAD FOR YOU ………. When you sit for long hours and then stand up, molecular cascades happen. For example, immediately upon standing up, the systems that process blood sugar, triglycerides and cholesterol gets activated. All it takes is for your body to carry its own weight by standing up.

  3. DANGERS OF SITTING AT YOUR DESK ALL DAY • What does it mean when somebody says, “You are sitting too much.”? Well, it doesn’t get any more literal than that. It actually means being on your butt for long periods of time. Sadly, it does not refer to sitting for pleasure alone like watching TV, reading, sitting in the park, etc. It also refers to sitting while doing something productive like sitting in class, lectures, working, driving, so on and so forth.

  4. How Much Do Australians Sit? According to a report, a typical Australian spends his waking hours this way: 9.3 hours per day is sedentary. They are either at work, travelling to work, sitting in front of a computer or TV, or doing other recreational activity that doesn’t require standing up. 6.5 hours per day involves light physical activity. 3 7 hours per day involves moderately-intense physical activity.

Dangers Of Sitting Too Much • Dr. James Levine’s investigation found out that the following happens to the body after prolonged sitting. • Organ Damage • Heart– When the body is seated, the blood flows slowly and the muscles slow down the fat-burning process. This makes it easier for the fatty acids to clog the heart. • Pancreas– Just one day of excessive sitting will trigger the pancreas to produce excessive amounts of insulin which may lead to diabetes. • Colon cancer – Excessive sitting increases the risk of colon, endometrial and breast cancer. This may be due to excessive insulin which promotes cell growth. It may also be due to the fact that movement boosts antioxidants that help eliminate cancer-causing free radicals.

  6. Posture Neck and shoulders – When in front of the computer, it’s common to push the head and neck forward. This can cause strains to the cervical vertebrae as well as permanent imbalances which can lead to strained neck, sore shoulders and pack pain. Back problems – When seated, there is added pressure to the spine and this becomes worse when hunched in front of a computer. The disks at the back are meant to expand and contract and when you sit for a long time, they become compressed and may lose flexibility.

Loss of Brainpower When you sit at your desk you may be solving all sorts of problems, organizing tasks, and using plenty of critical thinking skills, but even in the most stimulating of jobs your brain can become foggy from sitting for long periods of time. Moving muscles pump fresh blood and oxygen to the brain, which triggers the release of brain and mood enhancing chemicals. Your brain function will actually slow when you’re sedentary for long periods of time.

  8. How to Avoid Sitting Down too Much? Being active is an important part of a healthy lifestyle but is a fact that more than half of our population never engage in a vigorous physical activity on a regular basis. The dangers caused by excessive sitting must push us to have pockets of physical activities throughout our day. It can be done; you just have to consciously get up and move.

  9. THOSE WHO WORK BEHIND A DESK CAN DO THIS : If you work at your desk for long hours, try a standing desk or a high table or counter. Set a timer that will remind you to stand up and take a short walk for at least 10 minutes every hour. During short meetings in the office, make it a “standing” meeting. Or, better yet and when the weather permits, walk laps with your colleagues instead of gathering in a conference room. Organize your work area in such as way that you have to stand up to reach your files, the printer, telephone, etc. If you are really serious about it, position your work surface above a treadmill, with a computer screen and keyboard on a stand so that you can be in motion throughout the day. There are specialized treadmill-ready desks.
