  1. A Shopping Guide for the Mother of the Bride There was a time not so long ago when mothers of the bride wore dresses that were matronly and had light pastel shades. But not anymore! Mothers of the bride have a wide choice to express their personalized style and fashion sense and look as glamorous as age allows. Whether you are the bride helping your mom choose the best outfit for the great day or the mom choosing a dress for herself you will do well to follow this simple shopping guide.

  2. •Follow the bride – Let your daughter’s dress or the theme of the wedding be the benchmark to follow. The groom and the bride have fixed the tone of the wedding and you have to match the dress accordingly. Take cues from the bride’s style, color and the extent of formality. Regardless of whether it is a formal black-tie affair or a typical country wedding with cowboy boots and sombreros, your dress should not stick out like a sore thumb at the celebrations.

  3. •Time the purchase right –Mother of the bride dresses should be purchased at least three months prior to the wedding to leave enough time for alterations and special orders. Buy from specialty stores for bridal dresses, traditional bridal salons or other departmental stores. Many stores cater exclusively to these dresses so you should look around for options before making a purchase.

  4. Customarily, it is the mother of the bride that buys the dress first and then shares it with the mother of the groom. It is not necessary that they should match unless the bride and the groom want so but both should complement each other. Hence, make your choice early so that the mother of the groom has enough time to buy hers and make changes if necessary.  • •Follow color cues of the wedding party – The mother of the bride’s dress should complement the wedding party’s colors. Let your daughter choose the dress of the bridesmaid first before you make a choice. If possible get a swatch of their fabric to help search for a hue that will harmonize with the trend of the wedding party. One rule that you should follow is not to wear the same color as the bride. You might want to look stunning too but that should not steal the thunder from her. She is the star of the show that day.

  5. •Apply makeup just before the wedding – When should you apply makeup and do up the hair? While there are no fixed rules for this, your looks should match the dress and the overall theme. Have the hair and makeup done on the day of the wedding to be fresh and bright.       • Follow these tips and you will surely look your part at your daughter’s wedding.
