  2. Time to do course • 3 lessons per week • Tight concentrated course • schools start in previous term 4 • Therefore, every TAFE lesson is important • We have about 24 weeks to complete this course • … including assessments, research project, mapping skills and 3 major topics!

  3. Advantages of TAFE Geography • I studied geography at Sydney TAFE for HSC • new friends • No uniforms • No bells to end lessons • Chance to work in an ADULT environment • You will save money by coming to class…not shopping or going to movies!! • learn something new • new things to discuss… • Feel good about yourself when you succeed!

  4. Disadvantages of TAFE Geography • You need to be self disciplined – study each night, listen in class, work out a study program and practice writing answers regularly • You need to turn up to class on time • You need to turn off your mobile phone in class • You need to turn off MP3 players, iPods in class • Concentrating for 2 hour lessons can be hard..

  5. Equipment you will need • One geometric drawing compass • One clear 30 cm ruler • 3 lead pencils and sharpener • A 360º Protractor • Eraser • Highlight Pens • Small packet of coloured pencils eg. Derwent, Faber Castel or Crayola (not $2 shop varieties as these break easily)

  6. Equipment continued…. • Biros • 30 cm string • Stapler • A 4 Ring Binder • Loose leaf paper or lecture pad – NOT EXERCISE BOOKS • Plastic sleeves • Flash Drive for saving work from the computer – suggest up to 1 GB if you like using graphics • Glue Stick – DO NOT BUY CHEAP ONES – Uhu best brand! • Calculator – spare batteries

  7. TEXTBOOKS • YOU MUST BUY THE FOLLOWING: (1.) Owens, D; J. Paine and G. Reid (2003) Macquarie Revision Guides HSC Geography (2.) Stacey, Malcolm (2005) Atlas Skills Workbook. Longman Pearson • Optional – small World Atlas (eg. Purchase at Big W to save money)

  8. Other useful textbooks – in library or buy second hand • Paine, John et. al. ( 2001) Senior Geography 2. Higher School Certificate Course. Macmillan. Melbourne. • Kleeman, G et. al. (2000) A Geography of Global Interactions 2. HSC Course. Heinemann. Melbourne.

  9. Topics to be studied…. Preliminary course for those who have not completed Year 11 but important for Year 12 work HSC course - Ecosystems including two case studies • Urban Places including a case study of Sydney and research project • Economic Activity – Tourism – global study and case study - Fieldwork – compulsory and integral part of the course and possible separate exam questions - Senior Geography Project – urban issues - Mapping and Statistical skills – maps, tables, graphs, diagrams, photos, aerial photos, satellite images

  15. How much study? • You need to study every day • At least 2 hours per day • Even if assignments are not due you should revise each lesson • Practice writing exam answers • Plan a study timetable and stick to it – see teacher or Counsellors on Ground Floor • Have a goal and stick to it! • YOU HAVE TO WANT TO DO IT OTHERWISE WORK FOR A YEAR then come back to us…
