  3. The Death of Death’s Sting

  4. What do we talk about when we talk about the cross?

  5. When we talk about the cross we talk about self-sacrificial love.

  6. Hebrews 2:14-15 14 Since the children have flesh and blood, he too shared in their humanity so that by his death he might break the power of him who holds the power of death—that is, the devil— 15 and free those who all their lives were held in slavery by their fear of death.

  7. 1 Corinthians 15:54-55 54 “Death has been swallowed up in victory.” 55 “Where, O death, is your victory? Where, O death, is your sting?”

  8. Evil implodes at the cross

  9. Colossians 2:13-15 13 When you were dead in your sins and in the uncircumcision of your flesh, God made you alive with Christ. He forgave us all our sins, 14 having canceled the charge of our legal indebtedness, which stood against us and condemned us; he has taken it away, nailing it to the cross. 15 And having disarmed the powers and authorities, he made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them by the cross.

  10. 1 Peter 3:18 Christ suffered for our sins once for all time. He never sinned, but he died for sinners to bring you safely home to God. He suffered physical death, but he was raised to life in the Spirit.

  11. In Hebrews the power of death is connected to the power of the devil.

  12. Hebrews 2:14-15 14 Since the children have flesh and blood, he too shared in their humanity so that by his death he might break the power of him who holds the power of death—that is, the devil— 15 and free those who all their lives were held in slavery by their fear of death.

  13. The fear of death is one of the most destructive forces in our lives

  14. The resurrection means that the love that was revealed at the cross that casts out fear will drive fear out of our lives.

  15. When we die to ourselves, we live and death has lost its sting.
