  1. Why Is Manual Handling Awareness Important In Healthcare? Improper manual handling remains the single largest cause of injuries to healthcare workers. Studies show that many nurses have even lost their precious lives due to accidents caused when handling patients. Apart from nurses, other occupational groups in the healthcare domain at risk include health care assistants and facility cleaners. So, for these people, it is important to enroll in a patient manual handling course Dublin. With the right education, they will get to know how to handle patients safely without injuring themselves and the patients. How Is Patient Handling Different From Other Manual Handling? Any person would have chosen to work in the healthcare domain because of the intent to help people. The problem here is that the people he/she helps are often confined to poor mobility. They depend on the healthcare workers to get to a nearby facility for an examination or even just to turn in the bed. The problem with the human body is that it is an awkward heavy object. When you work in other domains and move objects, you will be doing it using a forklift. But, this is not possible in the healthcare domain. But, people continue to do manual and patient handling in other domains and healthcare without knowing the consequences. However, they would be aware of one or more of their colleagues with chronic neck or back pain in the healthcare domain. When Do Issues Occur With Improper Manual Handling? Injuries occur in the following cases in the healthcare domain:

  2. Handling of Linen and lead aprons • Adjustment and use of beds • Manual handling of trolleys • Falls, trips and strips • Muscular stress without handling any objects • Manual handling of people When talking about manual and patient handling injuries, strains and sprains are the main kinds. When it comes to injury of registered nurses, nearly 40 percent have faced back injuries, while 12 percent got upper limb injuries. Also, 9 percent have faced injuries in the lower limbs. In all patient-handling activities, beds were involved and it led to injuries. Examples include transferring and repositioning patients. Conclusion: Hospitals should give the utmost importance when it comes to handling patients. They should consider the importance of the safety of their nurses and other healthcare workers. This is why enrolling them in the right patient manual handling course becomes important. As employers, hospital authorities should give the utmost importance to finding the right training institution for this training to their workforce.
