  3. King Ahab • 1 Kings 16:29-33 29 In the thirty-eighth year of Asa king of Judah, Ahab the son of Omri began to reign over Israel, and Ahab the son of Omri reigned over Israel in Samaria twenty-two years. 30 And Ahab the son of Omri did evil in the sight of the LORD, more than all who were before him. 31 And as if it had been a light thing for him to walk in the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat

  4. , he took for his wife Jezebel the daughter of Ethbaal king of the Sidonians, and went and served Baal and worshiped him. 32 He erected an altar for Baal in the house of Baal, which he built in Samaria.

  5. 33 And Ahab made an Asherah. Ahab did more to provoke the LORD, the God of Israel, to anger than all the kings of Israel who were before him.

  6. The Powerful Ministry

  7. Raised the dead child 1 Kings 17:22 22 And the LORD listened to the voice of Elijah. And the life of the child came into him again, and he revived.

  8. Mt Carmel

  9. Kishon Brook

  10. Mt Carmel Jezreel

  11. A New Scenario • 1 Kings 19:1-2 Ahab told Jezebel all that Elijah had done, and how he had killed all the prophets with the sword. 2 Then Jezebel sent a messenger to Elijah, saying, "So may the gods do to me and more also, if I do not make your life as the life of one of them by this time tomorrow."

  12. 1 Kings 19:3 3 Then he was afraid, and he arose and ran for his life and came to Beersheba, which belongs to Judah, and left his servant there.

  13. Instead of fixing his gaze on God she filled his entire vision, he allowed fear to gripped his heart control him Paradox –kills Baal priests 850 of them Raises dead Brings rain Now scared?

  14. Withdrawal- isolation 1 Kings 19:4 4 But he himself went a day's journey into the wilderness and came and sat down under a broom tree

  15. Depression - Suicide • . And he asked that he might die, saying, "It is enough; now, O LORD, take away my life, for I am no better than my fathers."

  16. Deal with depression How does God

  17. God provides bread-resuscitates 1 Kings 19:5-6 5 And he lay down and slept under a broom tree. And behold, an angel touched him and said to him, "Arise and eat." 6 And he looked, and behold, there was at his head a cake baked on hot stones and a jar of water. And he ate and drank and lay down again. .

  18. God provides bread and encouragement 1 Kings 19:7 7 And the angel of the LORD came again a second time and touched him and said, "Arise and eat, for the journey is too great for you.". .

  19. God brings Elijah in to the Wilderness 1 Kings 19:8 8 And he arose and ate and drank, and went in the strength of that food forty days and forty nights to Horeb, the mount of God. . Fasting and prayer implied

  20. God ministers to Elijah 1 Kings 19:9 9 There he came to a cave and lodged in it. And behold, the word of the LORD came to him, and he said to him, "What are you doing here, Elijah?"

  21. Self absorption • 1 Kings 19:10 10 He said, "I have been very jealous for the LORD, the God of hosts. For the people of Israel have forsaken your covenant, thrown down your altars, and killed your prophets with the sword, and I, even I only, am left, and they seek my life, to take it away."

  22. Where is God? 1 Kings 19:11 11 And he said, "Go out and stand on the mount before the LORD." And behold, the LORD passed by, and a great and strong wind tore the mountains and broke in pieces the rocks before the LORD, but the LORD was not in the wind. And after the wind an earthquake, but the LORD was not in the earthquake. And after the fire the sound of a low whisper. 13 And when Elijah heard it, he wrapped his face in his cloak and went out and stood at the entrance of the cave Wind Earthquake Fire Whisper

  23. Self absorption • 1 Kings 19:14 14 He said, "I have been very jealous for the LORD, the God of hosts. For the people of Israel have forsaken your covenant, thrown down your altars, and killed your prophets with the sword, and I, even I only, am left, and they seek my life, to take it away."

  24. God’s instructions 1 Kings 19:15-17 15 And the LORD said to him, "Go, return on your way to the wilderness of Damascus. And when you arrive, you shall anoint Hazael to be king over Syria. 16 And Jehu the son of Nimshi you shall anoint to be king over Israel, and Elisha the son of Shaphat of Abel-meholah you shall anoint to be prophet in your place. 17 And the one who escapes from the sword of Hazael shall Jehu put to death, and the one who escapes from the sword of Jehu shall Elisha put to death.

  25. God sets the record straight-You are not alone • 1 Kings 19:18 18 Yet I will leave seven thousand in Israel, all the knees that have not bowed to Baal, and every mouth that has not kissed him."

  26. Guidelines in Dealing with Depression

  27. 1. Understand that Depression happens the best of us • Shame • Weakness…my early experince • Guilt Half Americans surveyed either themselves of family 46% considered it a health problem, and 43% saw it as a "sign of personal or emotional weakness National Mental Health Association 1992

  28. Churchill "Depression followed me around like a black dog all of my life."

  29. Elijah the Powerful

  30. Martin Luther August 2, 1527, "l have been thrown more than a whole week into death and tossed back and forth in hell.. .I have lost Christ totally and have been shaken by the floods and storms of desperation and of blasphemy against God."

  31. Prince of Preachers

  32. Royal Surrey Music Hall

  33. Holds 10000 worshippers 18

  34. "My deacons know well enough how, when I first preached in Exeter Hall, there was scarcely ever an occasion, in which they left me alone for ten minutes before the service, but they would find me in a most fearful state of sickness, produced by that tremendous thought of my solemn responsibility..." October 19, 1856, "Perhaps never a soul went so near the burning furnace of insanity, and yet came away unharmed.“ sufficient to shatter my reason Brights disease and gout

  35. “I was lying upon my couch during this last week, and my spirits were sunken so low that I could weep by the hour like a child, and yet I knew not what I wept for — but a very slight thing will move me to tears just now” — Compared with woman with cancer

  36. Implications: Accept one another, Accept yourself • 1 Corinthians 10:13 13 No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. • Others will not understand • Do not condemn • Do not judge • Give space • Like pit stop for cars in a race

  37. 2. Pay attention to physical needs first • Depression at the backwash of success-understand the vulnerable period • Left his servant behind • God is acutely aware of our frailty-how we are constructed..deals tenderly • God is patient • Allow angels to minister • No lectures-Give space and time to heal

  38. 3. Seek God Elijah

  39. Conscious effort to Go back to the wilderness • Israel first met God at Mt Sinai-Wandered 40 yrs • Jesus in Wilderness 40 days • Elijah 40 days • John Baptist- Call repentance to wilderness We take personal responsibility to move toward God

  40. Away from civilisation Away from the anxiety Away from the dissappointment

  41. Reconnecting with God Re-focussing of God Dependance Faith Obedience Recharging Wrestling

  42. 1 Kings 19:9 9 There he came to a cave and lodged in it. And behold, the word of the LORD came to him God is silent for 40 days But when He does speak Elijah is ready to listen

  43. God’s silence deals with our expectations • We want the pain to stop • We want the situation to change • We want to see Jesus ride in on a white horse • After 40 days we learn to wait to realign ourselves to His time table not ours • To his view point not ours • He won’t speak till we are ready to listen

  44. King Saul’ depression-Refused to seek God Serial Disobedience Offer sacrifices on his own (1 Samuel 13:9) Did not kill Amakelites ((1 Samuel 15:3-15). ) Sought help from diviners-witches despite being told to get rid of them (1 Samuel 28:3 ) God brought him David to play the harp (1 Sam 16-18), Saul nearly speared him Committed suicide
