  2. About gifted • The special abilities of the gifted and talented require programs that provide opportunities to develop abstract thinking, to sharpen higher cognitive processing, to practice creative problem solving, and to increase methods and styles of inquiry.

Quantitative - Math • With the use of the Arizona College and Career Readiness standards the look of math has changed. • Students will be asked to focus on fewer concepts but seek greater depth and understanding of the processes behind the concept. • We will always be asking: • Why? • Can you prove it? • What does it mean? • What is it related to? • Parent Resource • http://greatminds.net/parents

  5. Language arts • Adopted curriculum from the College of William & Mary • Encompasses • Reading • Interpretive thinking • Persuasive writing • Grammar • Research • Listening/Speaking • Viewing/Presenting

Language arts • This curriculum encompasses all of the new Common Core Language Arts Standards. • Lessons will be anchored by guided discussions and structured around advanced literature; the lessons are designed to allow considerable intellectual freedom to students and to encourage original thought.

Assigned texts • 4th grade • The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett • Words by Heart by Ouida Sebestyn • Taking Sides by Gary Soto • Elijah Buxton by Christopher Paul Curtis • 5th grade • The Watsons Go to Birmingham – 1963 Christopher Paul Curtis • A Wrinkle In Time Madeline L’Engle • Chasing Vermeer Blue Balliett • A Long Way From Chicago Richard Peck • The Wednesday Wars Gary Schmidt • The Giver by Lois Lowry • 6th grade • A selection of novels revolving around racism and bias. Students will read 4 novels independently.

  8. Grading • This, often, is the are where students seem to overwhelm themselves. I remind them regularly that this is an accelerated program and that learning is achieved through the willingness to learn from the mistakes we make. • It is okay if they do not earn an “A”. • I ask that you encourage your students to do their best, ask questions, and seek out help. • Put less stress on the grade and more stress on the effort!

  9. Homework • Language Arts • Latin will be assigned weekly beginning the 4th week of school. • 4th grade Latin will begin in quarter 2 • Much of the homework assigned will revolve around the novels being read. • Students will usually have multiple days, or weeks, to complete assignments.
