    2. How Pollution Affects Marine Life Each year, plastic waste in water in coastal areas kills up to 100,000 marine mammals, 1,000,000 sea birds and countless fish .

    3. How Sewage Affects Ocean Pollution 1.2 trillion gallons of untreated sewage, storm water, and industrial wastes are discharged into United States waters annually .

    4. Ocean Pollution Facts Over 80% of ocean pollution comes from land-based activities such as runoff!

    5. Oceans 36% of ocean pollution comes to oceans and rivers as waste and runoff from cities and business! Solid garbage also makes its way to the ocean!

    6. Materials That Can Reach the Ocean Almost everything we throw away, if not disposed of properly, can reach the sea. Oil spills only make up 12% of the ocean’s pollution.

    7. Oil Spills The 2nd worst oil spill in history happened on the Bay of Campeche from June 3rd 1979 through March 23rd 1980. 140 million gallons of oil were spilled!

    8. The Worst Oil Spill In History Persian Gulf, Kuwait January 19, 1991 380 million to 520 million gallons of oil were spilled The 4 inch oil slick covered 4,000 square miles. The spill was not an accident. During the Gulf War, Iraqi soldiers attempted to prevent a potential landing by American soldiers.
