18. Now in the following instructions I do not commend you, because when you come together it is not for the better but for the worse. For, to begin with, when you come together as a church, I hear that there are divisions among you; and to some extent, Ibelieve it.

19. Indeed, there have to be factions among you, for only so will it become clear who among you are genuine. When you come together, it is not really to eat the Lord’s supper. For when the time comes to ear, each of you goes ahead with your own supper, andone goes hungryand anotherbecomes drunk.

20. What! Do you not have homes to eat and drink in? Or do you show contempt for the church of God and humiliate those who have nothing? What should I say to you? Should I condemn you? In this matter I do not commend you!

27. Whoever, therefore, eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be answerable for the body and blood of the Lord. Examine yourselves, and only then eat of the bread and drink of the cup.

40. *INVITATION TO THE LORD’S TABLE L: Brothers and sisters in Christ, I invite you to come to the joyful feast of the Lord. This Table, at its core, is about love – unconditional love which laid down its life for each of you.

43. L: We thank you, God, for the compassion and caring with which you created this world. We are grateful that you formed us in your image and breathed into us that same compassion for others. When we turned away and set aside ourcompassion, you spoke to usthrough your prophets andyour love delivered us from sin.

44. In all of this you showed us love and taught us how to love. Through the ages you have loved everyone, regardless. So with your people on earth and all the company of heaven, we praise your name and join their unending hymn:

Hosanna in the highest. • L: In sending Jesus the Christ, the obedient one, you revealed to all of us how your love works. He healed bodies and hearts.

46. He knew the Law and knew it was all about loving you and loving others. He made sure all Law pointed to compassion for all your children. For that we are deeply thankful. • P: Praise to you, Lord Jesus: By dying, you destroyed sin and death; by rising, you offer us resurrection life. Lord Jesus, come again.

47. L: God of understanding, let your Holy Spirit move in power and love other us and over these earthly gifts of bread and wine. By our sharing of them may we experience the mystery of true communion of the body and blood of Christ, and may we become one in him.
