Style plays a significant role in our daily lives. What we put on our bodies, how we style our hair, or how we decorate our houses are all examples of ways in which we express our sense of style. It’s a chance to show off our individuality and can help us communicate in a wide variety of contexts. https://medium.com/@jonshelby09.22/can-you-mix-fashion-function-in-2023-db59be8f775b 1/4

  2. 1/12/23, 3:32 PM Can You Mix Fashion & Function In 2023? | by Jon Shelby | Jan, 2023 | Medium Every time I observe a new trend in the fashion industry, I have to ask myself, “How will this appear to people in 2023?” Today, we’ll be discussing the major question, “Can form and function coexist in 2023?” It is not true that “form follows function” in every situation. It’s typically a place where form and function complement each other. Some of us have looked at common items and realised we have no idea how they function, tried to repair them, or felt the irritation of holding something we couldn’t use until we read the instructions. Form can follow function when you want to communicate a lifestyle. It used to be simple to identify athletes just by looking at their footwear. The same is true now, with one important difference: what we wear is not only about form, but also about function. A pair of speedy running shoes will look different from a pair of cushioned sneakers designed for long distances. Formal shoes, healthcare shoes, and sneakers all have their distinct styles, just as hiking boots and winter boots do. The question is, though, what happens when the many genres begin to blend? This year, I saw a disturbing trend: people were wearing shoes that had more than one purpose. This led to an increasingly chaotic situation in which everyone seemed to be wearing the same item. Form can lead to function when you are communicating your identity. Fashion is a form of expression. It’s how we show the world what we’re into and what we believe in. The problem with fashion is that it frequently makes practicality impossible. A beautiful gown might not be the most practical pick for a work meeting or social outing. It’s not as versatile as a blazer or other corporate tops, which may be worn both formally and casually. However, as I’ve mentioned before, form can follow function when it comes to expressing one’s identity to the world. Some suggestions for making your wardrobe more practical: https://medium.com/@jonshelby09.22/can-you-mix-fashion-function-in-2023-db59be8f775b 2/4

  3. 1/12/23, 3:32 PM Can You Mix Fashion & Function In 2023? | by Jon Shelby | Jan, 2023 | Medium Wear clothes that fit well and that accentuate your best features. People judge you solely on first impressions, so work on improving your appearance if you want to be taken seriously. If your clothes don’t fit well or aren’t flattering to your figure, people will have a hard time paying attention to anything else. Make sure the little touches of everything you buy reflect your character. You can tell someone’s style by their choice of belts, jewellery, shoes (high heels vs. flats), and colours (pastels vs bright colours). Sometimes, it’s just about fitting form and function together in an aesthetically pleasing way. The future is typically pictured as a place where traditional categories such as “art” and “technology” no longer apply. Those familiar with science fiction movies like Star Trek will understand what I’m referring to. For this reason, the fashion-as-art or art-as- fashion debate is so enticing. When designing clothes for ourselves, though, we can’t overlook the importance of form following function. It’s critical that clothing retains its ability to keep us safe from the environment. So, if you want to be dry and safe while hiking or snowboarding, you should wear clothes and shoes designed for those sports, like gloves, a light fleece or wool top, baselayers in chilly weather, and non-slip footwear that can be worn for both business and recreational settings. However, sometimes the solution is as easy as striking a pleasing balance between design and function. Luckily, many brilliant designers have already found a way to successfully marry high fashion with everyday usability. To sum up… Overall, we need to learn more about this connection over time. If form and function can coexist peacefully, the result is a design that breaks new ground. What would be even more amazing is if these plans were implemented. https://medium.com/@jonshelby09.22/can-you-mix-fashion-function-in-2023-db59be8f775b 3/4

In the future, clothing should always be functional and fashionable.
