  9. A-Graded chances Screened – can’t see a thing

  10. A-Graded chances Perfect execution – 2-on-1

  11. Where do I put my money? • B-Graded shots (20% - 6 shots per game) Top Goalie – takes 5 – 6 shots Good Goalies – takes 4 – 5 shots Average Goalie – takes 3 – 4 shots

  12. I put my money (salarycap / budget) on a ”goodenough” goalie and allocatebig $ on positions whichgiveme puck possession • Game has changed; moreoffense, possession, all linescan play, goonsgone

  13. Your goal – puck possession • More possession = easier for yourgoalie • Less possession = morepressure on goalie • Withmore possession, I don’tneed to spendbigsalary on topgoalie • Goaliecan be ”Good-enough”

  14. It’s a young goalie’s game • 75% have won 1st Cup in first 5 years • 62% have won 1 st Cup before age 30 • 10% won 1st Cup after age 30 Season 2017-2018 • 60% ofhighestpaidgoaliesmadeplayoffs • 75% oflowestpaidgoaliesmadeplayoffs

  15. Is more expensive better? 2018 - 2019 • Top-5 earning starters avg $8.1 > 11,2% cap • Bottom-5 earning starters av $2.9 > 3.7% cap

  16. Salary cap or budget… • Ideal number for starting goalie: 7%

  17. Summary: • A top [earning] goalie can’t save a poor team • Good team = possession team • Take $ from top goalie, put on top-D or C • Teams win with good-enough goalies • You can’t win without top-D or top-C • Young G with less $ are more hungry
