What is SWPBIS? • Schoolwide Positive Behavior Support • The schoolwide discipline plan is established to provide a positive school climate, and to create a supportive environment for personal, social, and academic growth for students and staff. (Colvin, 2007) • It’s a component of RTI (Response to Intervention). • Attention is focused on creating and sustaining: • Tier1: Intervention strategies for all students(70-90%) • Tier 2: Intervention strategies for those at risk of problem behavior ( 10-30% of students). • Tier 3: Intervention strategies for individual students ( 1-10% of students). • For every 1 negative comment…you give 4 positive comments.

  8. Chaffee Elementary SCHOOLWIDE SOCIAL BEHAVIOR MATRIX Chaffee Elementary Positive Behavior Support Mission Statement: Our purpose is to consistently teach social expectations that foster academic success, promote positive behaviors and provide safety across all school environments.

Lessons of Expectations • Students learn better ways of behaving by being taught social skills directly and receiving positive feedback about what they are doing correctly or appropriately. • After developing our Behavior Expectations Matrix, our staff was divided into groups and developed the lessons during a teacher in-service. • We continue each year to edit our lesson plans and develop new ones to be taught to our students.

Example of PBS Lesson Context: Hallway Expectation: Be safe, Be respectful and Be responsibleSpecific Skill/Behavior: Walk on right side/Face forward/Stand in straight line/Walk silently/Keep hands behind your back/ Return to class promptly Grade Level: Pre-K through 6 Tell: The teacher tells students that today they are going to practice walking in the hallway to and from class. She will tell students that they will understand the behavior expectations for the hallway. The teacher will display actual photos on the mimio board showing children in the hallway. Students will discuss which photos show behavior that is safe, respectful, and responsible. The teacher will explain to students the importance of returning to class promptly. Show: Example – The teacher will demonstrate the correct way to walk in the hallway. Getting Close – The teacher will demonstrate proper hallway walking behavior with some minor mistakes, like whispering or putting hands by her side. Non-Example – The teacher will run down the hallway, talking loudly and butting in line. Example – The teacher will pick two students to demonstrate the appropriate way to walk in line. Practice: The class will practice walking to and from certain areas of the school following all of the expectations. Students can rate their classroom performance with a thumbs-up or thumbs-down and keep moving until they receive all thumbs up. Feedback: When the teacher or other staff members notice students being safe, respectful and responsible in the hallway, they should be recognized through the schoolwide system. Staff should also recognize students by telling them “Great job walking with your hands behind your back and staying in line! You’re being responsible and safe.” Reteach: The teacher will take small groups of students on a walking tour of the school, pointing out when students make correct decisions about how behave.The teacher can make students who are having trouble following the rules “hallway monitors” that need to watch for correct behavior in other students. Notes: Requires photos of correct and incorrect hallway behaviors.

Teaching/Re-teaching Schedule -Table of contents was developed for the lessons stating when they needed be taught at the beginning of school and re-taught at the beginning of second semester. -Focus of the week-specific skill to review for the week (we were announcing; last year emailed; need to go back to announcing because teachers aren’t announcing it to the students) -Staff is accountable for teaching lessons. -Teachers may also re-teach lessons as they deem necessary -When students need additional lessons in the cafeteria; the principal or assistant principal teach them these lessons over to them.

  15. 1st week of school • Teach the six areas of matrix • Bus lessons • Cafeteria lessons • Playground lessons • Classroom lessons • Hallway and Bathroom lessons • Teach all settings on Friday along with celebration We begin on a Thursday this year, so we are switching things around a little and getting it all accomplished in two days instead of three Kick Off with Students

Teacher Recognition Michele Dollars given for: Perfect attendance each week When teacher have their devil band bags refilled with 50 more bands Re-teaching lessons their name goes in for a drawing for money Having grades in on time Birthday is recognized Teachers can cash in Michele dollars $10 teacher can choose: Jean day Free lunch from cafeteria Have your papers copied for the week A class supply of sharpened pencils Leave at 3:00 p.m. $20 teachers can choose: Principal takes your class for 30 minutes Arrive at school at 7:45 Soda from Rhodes Long lunch 1hour 10 min. Free recess duty Wear jeans all week long

  20. Principal’s Chair for the day is a big reward that students like to earn devil bands for.

  21. H.O.T. Club = Homework On Time This is a monthly award that students earn just by turning in their homework on time. Students can choose from the following menu for their reward. H.O.T. Club Rewards game day extra computer time movie/bring a snack from home extra recess

  22. H.O.T. Club = is done solely in the classroom: • The teachers recognize the students monthly or quarterly • They do this by giving the students devil bands and/or giving the class a flame for all having assignments in on time We have changed it to:

  23. Classes can earn flames for positive behavior as a class. Example: The whole class is walking in a straight line, hands are behind their backs, they are all facing forward, and no one is talking. The school nurse observes the class walking by her office and tells the teacher that they are doing a nice job of being safe, respectful, and responsible and deserve a flame. Fired Up Awards When your class earns 20 flames they can earn any one of the following: game day extra computer time movie/bring a snack from home extra recess lunch in the classroom/outside class dance party

Students that have no minor or major discipline referrals earn: Positive Behavior Award Reward List for the 2014-2015 School Year 1st Quarter – Movie and Popcorn 2nd Quarter – Trip to Skating Rink/Bounce houses 3rd Quarter – Trip to DQ for Ice Cream 4th Quarter – Special Lunch All Year – YMCA Day

  30. Data for the past 5 years 698 total referrals for the year

  31. Defiance, physical aggression and disruption are the 3 major referrals in our building the past 3 years.

  32. Referrals by Location: Referrals by location; Notice the bus has gone due. This is due to looking at data and getting monitors on the buses.
