  2. Introduction • Electrolysis is the movement of “cations” towards the “cathode” and the “anions” towards the “anode”.

  3. Ions can only move in molten or aqueous sate, as the ions are tightly packed in solid state and are not mobile.

  4. Cathode • The positive ions (cations) accept electrons at the cathode and get reduced. e.g/- sodium ion + electron sodium metal

  5. Anode • The negative ions (anions) donate electrons at the anode and get oxidised. e.g/- chloride ion electron + chlorine gas

  6. Applications • Metal Purification Pure metal dissolves from the anode and gets deposited at the cathode. Cathode deposits Anode dissolving Metal ion electrolyte

  7. Applications • Electroplating metal dissolves from anode and gets coated on the object connected to the cathode. Object to be coated Metal (copper)

  8. Applications • Extraction of metals. Metals high up in the reactivity series are extracted by electrolysis. Ores used are in molten form.
