Solving Equations with Variables on Both Sides

In this assignment, students will warm up by solving equations with variables on both sides of the equal sign. They will practice undoing parentheses, combining like terms, and adding/subtracting to undo variable terms. The objective is to solve each equation step by step.

  1. Warm Up Solve each equation. 1. -6d = d + 4 2. 8z – 7 = 5z – 7 3. 2 – 2t = 7t + 4

  2. Solving Equations 2.4 B

  3. Objective • TSWBAT solve an equation with variables on both sides of the equal sign.

  4. Solve each equation. 4n + 3(1 – n) = 2(n + 1) 1. Undo the parenthesis using the distributive property. 4n + 3 – 3n = 2n + 2 2. Combine like terms on the same side of the equal sign. 1n + 3 = 2n + 2 3. Add/subtract to undo one of the variable terms. -2n -2n -1n + 3 = 2 4. Finish Solving -3 -3 -1n = -1 -1 -1 n = 1

  5. Both variables cancel out. False True Identity or All Real Numbers No Solution

  6. Solve each equation. 1. 5n + 2 = 3n + 2(1 + n)

  7. Solve each equation. 1. 3(1 – 2x) = 4 – 6x 2. 8(2f – 3) – 4f = 4(4f – 8) 3. 9c + 2 = 2(c – 6) 4. 2(6 – 4d) = 24 – 8d

  8. Assignment: • Pg. 115-116 # 19-28, 40-42
