  1. Monsoons Impact on South Asia

  2. Meteorology 101 • Atmospheric pressure – the weight of the atmosphere pressing down on any point on earth. • Air sinks in areas of high pressure and few clouds form • Air rises in low pressure areas and rain clouds form

  3. Monsoons • Seasonal winds • Summer monsoon winds blow from the southwest and bring rain to South Asia • Winter monsoons blow from the northeast and bring dry conditions

  4. Orographic effect • The precipitation that occurs when moist air rises up the side of a mountain. As the air rises, it cools down and releases most of its moisture as rain or snow. • The windward side of a mountain receives large amounts of rain • The leeward side of a mountain receives very little rain and falls in the rain shadow.

  5. Monsoons • Blow from the southwest from April to October: • Wet season. • India gets more than 80% of its rainfall during the monsoon. • Blow from the northeast from October to April: • Dry season. • The shifting of the pattern rather unpredictable: • An early or late Monsoon can have negative impact on agriculture.

  6. Dominant Wind Patterns in the Winter (October to April) – Dry Season H (Cold) Monsoon Region L (Warm) L (Warm) Monsoon Region

  7. Dominant Wind Patterns in the Summer (April to October) – Wet Season L (Warm) Monsoon Region H (Cold) Monsoon Region

  8. Average Annual Precipitations (in millimeters) Dry continental Driest desert on earth Gobi Desert Ganges Delta Mawsynram, India (467” of rain per year; 11860 mm). Most precipitation on earth Monsoon east Borneo Raining every day with no dry season

  9. Matching Activity • There are 4 of each: climate graphs, maps, pictures, notes cards They describe 4 different cities in South Asia. Sort the cards into 4 groups, so you have 1 climate graph, 1 map, 1 picture, and 1 note card for each of the 4 cities. Hint: Divide the cards into wet and dry climates first. Use the Ch. 27 reading to help you.

  10. City: Climate Type: Absolute Location: Relative location: Wet season: Dry season: Annual Rainfall: Sketch a map or picture here. Effects of living in this climate: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. Adaptations to living in this climate: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5.
