  3. Objectives for Today • Give an overview of the Lew Williams Project • What, Why, Where, When, and Who? • Get go ahead on proposed sites for 2012-13 • Share long range potential use of vacant facilities • Share preliminary information about Head Start

  5. What is the Lew Williams Project The Lew Williams Project is a multiagency initiative to provide quality education and services to children ages 0-4 to increase the likelihood of them being academically, socially and physically ready to start kindergarten

  6. Why the Lew Williams Project? • Students from selected areas have a greater incidence of not being ready for kindergarten • For every student who enters kindergarten not ready to learn it costs the district $$$$$ • Other agencies are ready to collaborate to make the most of services available • There is a direct link to the District Strategic Plan-early childhood, graduation rate and proficiency gaps

  7. Objectives • Provide quality education services to ages 0-4 • Increase the number of students with Kindergarten Readiness • Provide wrap around services to families • Provide professional development to staff and other community providers • Involve parent and community integration

  11. Parent and Community Integration The objective of the Lew Williams parent and community component is to develop an innovative platform to better engage parents, families and communities in the child’s learning processes and practices to increase school readiness of participating children.

Developing Highly Effective Teachers & Staff • We will provide Highly Qualified and Certified Teachers advanced training and significant professional development in critical areas of early childhood education such as: • Social and Emotional Development • Family Engagement • Emerging Language and Literacy • School Readiness and Resilience

Timeline (2011-12) • Collaborate with multiple agencies • Identify sites-short term and long term • Develop communications plan • Respond to RFP for Early Head Start and Head Start • Identify existing school sites with classrooms • Communicate plan to community • Identify highly skilled early childhood workforce, birth to 4 program development • Determine outcome goals and align data collection

Timeline (2012-13) • Begin program at one south and one north county site (pTEC/Gibbs and Kings Highway) • Partner Early Childhood Education students at Gibbs with toddlers at pTEC • Expand professional development, build a highly qualified early childhood workforce • Review outcomes measurement data and adjust, as necessary • Continue to identify sites for classrooms

Timeline (2013-14) • Begin implementation at Melrose Elementary • Implement Head Start and Early Head Start (if awarded grant) • Identify additional sites-using first sites as demonstration/model centers • Partner with other agencies to expand professional development for private early childhood sites to create a community of highly skilled professionals(JWB,ELC,SPC)
