  1. Using turnitin to improve student writing and reduce plagiarism… without overwhelming teachers

  2. A priority of our district, our school and our IB program is to support a high standard of student learning in a manner that allows students to be challenged, collaborative and responsible. By using turnitin, we are using a 21st century tool to allow students • to peer review • to learn about the process of writing • to understand what plagiarism is and how to avoid it • to utilize JIT learning with the system’s handbook links In doing so, we allow teachers • to incorporate more writing in every class • to grade more efficiently by using GradeMark capabilities • to grade papers paperlessly • to “mark” grammar, mechanics and punctuation errors automatically goals

  3. Feedback is essential for learning…and is time-consuming 4-5 page assignment @ 20 minutes per paper X 30 students = 10 hours of grading Many studies indicate that effective feedback is one of the hallmarks of increased student learning. Heinrich et al (2009) suggested that an essential issue with “high quality assignment marking is the time required,” and found that e-tools can be “used to increase efficiency, with the time freed-up being invested into quality improvements, again supported by e-tools”(pg. 469). Turnitin.com (2014) promises online grading “saves instructors time and provides richer feedback with marks directly on student assignments.”

  4. Don’t like to kill trees? Don’t like to carry home stacks of essay? Tired of writing the same comments, over and over again? Make use of GradeMark!

  5. You can use automated comments, create your own, or even give oral comments. • QuickMark comments provide explanations and links for students. • Comments can be stored to use as QuickMarks later. Can create a “bank” for each type of assignment. • Can create general comments that are individualized. • Rubrics establish a standard and illustrate how students can achieve benchmark standards. • ETS e-rater integration with GradeMark provides grammar and usage feedback. Using GradeMark’s automated buttons expedites teacher feedback and offers students ample and constructive information. Interactive demo for using Grade Mark

  6. You can create your own rubric, adapt one that is already created, or simply use turnitin’s rubrics. Here are a couple of webinars you can watch: Faster Easier Grading with GradeMark RubricsDesign and develop rubrics in GradeMark to give clear and objective feedback on student writing while communicating expectations of how they will be evaluated. Attendees will learn how to choose appropriate criteria and collaboratively build a rubric during the session. Watch Now Grading with Common Core State Standards Aligned RubricsExamines the CCSS-aligned rubrics developed by Turnitin and the Saddleback College English Professional Learning Council. Topics address how rubrics play an integral role in measuring student-learning outcomes that better reflect students’ learning. Watch Now Rubrics for PE, science, math, the arts, IB, etc.!
