  1. POLAR/URBAN/TROPICAL RESEARCH BREAKOUT “Ice Coffee in Paris” Moderator: John Militzer Rapporteur: Steve Williams 10 Participants (including John/Steve)

  2. Participant Interest • Most interested in Polar/Climate Change • Urban characterization • Looking for information on on-going activities and especially upcoming field projects  information resource/repository? • Link aerosol/trace gas modeling to observations • Ground-based inlet sampling of WV (extreme cold/wet environments) • Improved chemistry measurements (e.g. CH4, O3 depletion, Br oxides) • Instrument development/testing for space deployment

  3. Discussion Issues • In-situ sampling problems (experiment design, spatial scale, balance of measurements, sampling strategy…) • Sophisticated system vs multiple low cost systems • Standardization of measurements and quality control (e.g. consistency, calibration, representativeness….) • Getting local/indigenous people involved in long-term science/monitoring • Improved coordination of arctic chemistry observation facilities (minimal environmental impact) • Uses of “platforms of opportunity” (e.g. ships, buses, fleet vehicles, etc.) • Better boundary layer characterization (e.g. height, structure, turbulence, mixing….)

  4. NSF FACILITY AUGMENTATION • Wind Lidars • Doppler vs basic measurements • Mobile platform? • Single Particle Mass Spectrometer • Opportunity for collaborative development/use • Aerosol/Trace gas measurements • Heavy LiftingTethersonde/Blimp • Robotic platform measurements (e.g. cable/autonomous)
