  2. What are the different parts of a sentence? SUBJECT The subject is either a noun or a noun phrase. It can be a person or a thing that is being discussed or referred to in a sentence. Example: Edgar is walking down the road. *Edgar is the subject; it answers the question, “who is walking down the road?” PREDICATE The predicate is the verb that describes/ indicates the action of the subject. Example: Sheila went to the room. *went is the predicate; it answers the question, “what about Sheila?” DIRECT OBJECT A direct object is the receiver of the action. Example: The student aced the exam. *the exam is the direct object; it answers who/ what was affected by the action INDIRECT OBJECT The indirect object usually precedes the direct object. It tells to whom or for whom the action was done. Example: The instructor gave the students a reward. *the students answer the question, “for whom was the reward?” CLAUSE A clause is a group of words that provides additional information to the sentence. It has two types: oA dependent clause cannot stand alone. Example: On rainy days oAn independent clause can stand alone and express a complete thought. Example: He did his best, but it was too much to handle. *But it was too much to handle is the independent clause. PHRASE A phrase is a group of words that expresses an incomplete thought. Example: The lovely flowers *an incomplete thought; needs to be filled up additional words A sentence is composed of different parts that help convey the meaning effectively.
