  1. OVERVIEW OF STANDARDISATION EFFORTS AND DEVELOPMENT IN QATAR PETROLEUM SAIF AL-NAIMI, ABDULZIZ MAARAFIA & DR MUAYYAD ABDULAFO AJJAWI (Ph.D, M.Sc) International Standards Workshop For Global Oil and Gas Industry Doha 3rd. & 4th of April 2006 QP Website: www.qp.com.qa

  2. AGENDA • Qatar Petroleum Standardization and Standards Development. 2. Qatar Petroleum and national Standardisation 3. Qatar Petroleum Efforts in Regional and International Standardisation. 4. Challenges Facing the Adoption of International Standards in Qatar Oil and Gas Industry.

  3. QATAR PETROLEUM (QP) Overview • Established in 1974 as a national corporation completely owned by the State of Qatar. • Responsible for all oil and gas industry activities in Qatar, including exploration and drilling for hydrocarbon substances, production, refining, transport, storage, sale and export of the aforementioned substances and their derivatives and by- products. • The operations and activities of QP are conducted at various onshore locations, which include Doha, Dukhan, Mesaieed and Ras Laffan Industrial Cities, as well as offshore areas including Halul Island, offshore production stations, drilling platform and North Gas Field.

  4. QATAR OIL AND GAS INDUSTRY • Qatar hydrocarbon products are produced mainly from: Onshore Dukhan Field,Two offshore oil fields (Bul Hanine and Maydan Mahzam) and North Gas Field. • Other offshore fields have been developed in cooperation with major international oil and gas companies through production- sharing agreements. Dukhan

  5. QATAR OIL AND GAS INDUSTRY • Currently, there is a great emphasis on the development of the large non-associated gas reserves of North Field. Three projects; are already tapping the Gas North Field • Qatar Petroleum is committed to utilizing the latest technology and to improve the recovery of oil and gas reserves through the application of well established, state-of-the-art technology as captured within international standards.

  6. WHAT IS STANDARDISATION? Definition Standardization is the activity of establishing, with regard to actual or potential problems, provisionsfor common and repeated use, aimed at the achievement of the optimum degree of order in a given context. (ISO/IEC Guide2)

  7. WHAT IS STANDARD? Definition Standard is a document established by consensus and approved by recognized body, that provides, for common and repeated use, rules, guidelines, or characteristics for activities or their results, aimed at the achievement of the optimum degree of order in a given context (ISO/IEC Guide 2)

  8. WHY STANDARDS ARE NEEDED FOR OIL AND GAS INDUSTRY? • To the operator, standards are the minimum acceptable requirements to satisfy the objectives. • To the contractor, standards are the maximum requirements provided to do the work.

  9. STANDARDISATION IN QATAR PETROLEUM (QP) Corporate Standards Development Generate New and Update Existing Standards to Satisfy: • Corporate main requirements for quality, safety, uniformity and reliability. • Latest revisions of international, national, regional and industry standards (through IHS system). • Corporate specific requirements, practices/experiences. • National regulations and legislative rules • Latest Technology, market availability, cost optimization and good engineering practice.
