Major Events in The History of Education • 1635 – Founding of Boston Public Schools • 1647 – Massachusetts Public Law of 1647 • 1751 – American Academy founded by Benjamin Franklin • 1840s – The Public School Movement • 1852 – Massachusetts requires compulsory education for all students • Late 1800s – Establishment of Freedmen’s Schools in Antebellum America • 1954 – Brown v. Topeka Board of Education reversed • 1965 – The Elementary and Secondary Education Act • 1972 – Title 9 • 2002 – No Child Left Behind Act • 2009 – Race to the Top

Gender in EducationDisadvantages to Females • 90% of women cluster in 5 traditional jobs • The top 5 careers for females in a study done in 2008 were Secretary/Administrative Assistant, Registered Nurse, Elementary or Middle school teacher, Cashier, and Salesperson (Lowen) • Females populate several traditional majors (English, French, Spanish, music, dance, and theatre) • There are still many segregated schools and some public schools have created segregated classrooms • Although more male students drop out female students are less likely to go back to school • There are still gaps when it comes to math and science and AP and honors classes in these subjects • Girls are more likely to get out of advanced programs early • Lower scores on standardized tests • Teachers are more likely to give male students more attention in the classroom • Health concerns

Gender in EducationDisadvantages to Males • Less males in college • On average males have lower grades in school and are less academically engaged • Generally, less likely to want to please teachers (more focused on play than homework) • More likely to have a learning-disability and to fail a class • Generally, less artistic or musical ability • More likely to get into disciplinary trouble and be involved in drugs or alcohol • More likely to be alienated and not keep close friends

Bilingual Education • Definition – schooling in which those not fluent in the standard or national language are taught in their own language. • How are languages chosen? • Threats to America • Alliances • Migration/ Immigrants • Power and Influences • How common the language is Benefits Creates open minded children by giving them access to different cultures. Makes learning a third or more languages much easier. Fosters understanding, appreciation and respect of differences. Increases self-esteem and confidence in social interactions. Provides better economic and employment opportunities Consequences Learning English takes longer Costly resource Assimilation resistance Kept linguistically isolated from others
