  2. INTRODUCTION The computer captures the imagination of many researchers. It offers an opportunity to store vast quantities of data in a comparatively small space, the ability to search this data very rapidly and make selections there from and the ability to manipulate or “massage” the data to produce a result in a format particularly useful to the individual researcher. One of the advantage frequently trusted for computerized legal research is the possibility of placing into the computer storage area of memory banks the full text of whatever document is someday is to be retrieved.

Analyzing this statement of facts about computer these things come forward:- • Opportunity to store vast quantities of data in a small space. • Ability to reach this data very rapidly. • Ability to manipulate or ‘massage’ data to produce result in format useful to the individual researcher. • Possibility of storage of full document which is to be retrieved.

Some examples of search tools in the field of Law:- • Availability of the cases decided by the Privacy council , Supreme Court or High Court cases , e.g. the softwares developed by Publishers on CD Roam. • Sending e-mail. • Bulletin Boards on a message center. • Retrieving files through “File transfer Protocol”( FTP) • Remote log in or telnet which allow to tap into a remote computer for e.g. at a remote library.

Advantage of Computer Assisted Legal Research • It saves money. • Saves storage space. • Information is more current. • Can be assessed from a variety of locations. • Provides opportunity to retrieve documents that might not be readily available. • Updates in law available quickly. • Researchers need not to prepare any biographical cards. • Text can be stored forever. • It can be changed or modified till last date of final print. • Exchange of information is easy. • Helpful in modified thesis to publish papers or books.

Utility of IT for Lawyers • The database for research by lawyer is expanding rapidly. • Computerized legal research savers time of lawyers. • It eliminates the possibility of overlooking an important precedents. • Office management is more easy. • Publishers has come foreword with extremely user-friendly revolutionary research tool-computerized law information database.eg-SCC online. • It can be useful for people of allied fields like those working in corporate or government legal cells. • It is useful for the law students also.

Computer in Law Courts:- • Helpful in management and maintenance of court records. • Use of ‘Computer Animation’ and ‘Computer Aided Design’ software to maker images of crime scenes. • Recording statement through video conferencing. • The status of pending case could be checked on internet thus provides transparency. • Assists judicial administration in reducing pendency of cases. • Provide access to legal and judicial database to the judges.

Use of IT by Law Teachers:- • Readily availability of latest and updated status and case laws. • Easy to plan the course and divide into lectures. • Very helpful to deliver in class with aids like PowerPoint Presentation. • Analyses or comparative analyses on given topics is easy. • Very useful in research. • Saves time and energy.

  9. WORDS OF CAUTION • Computers have come to occupy a very significant role in the modern legal research, but they only supplement and can hardly replace library. • After obtaining the relevant material from the computer research, the lawyer must analyze research and evaluate the material applying the law based upon this evaluation. • Heavy expenditure. • Literal search • Requires considerable training and practice for effective use. • Authenticity must be carefully scrutinized.

  10. CONCLUSION THIS GENERATION IS THE GENERATION OF COMPUTERS. NO SERIOUS LAWYER, LEGAL RESEARCHER CAN DO WITHOUT INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY. THESE IS AN URGENT NEED FOR COMPUTARIZED AND SCIENCTISTS LEGAL OUTPUTS FROM THE LEGAL PROFESSION AS A WHOLE.
