  2. Debate is a sport? • Yes! Debate Team members “fight” using words, but in a controlled, sophisticated manner. • The JUDL (Jersey Urban Debate League) arranges tournaments and awards for competitive academic debates. • Members practice with one topic to gain a command of the facts and an ability to speak on topic clearly and concisely.

  3. What are the benefits? • To improve and refine speaking and listening skills. • To improve critical thinking skills, which happens improves academic performance. • 94% of debaters in the JUDL go on to successfully complete four-year colleges. • Most become lawyers, teachers, managers, elected officials, CEOs and administrators. • More than 150 colleges and universities across the country actively recruit urban debaters and many offer four year debate scholarships.

  4. What is a tournament like? Teams from various schools meet on a Saturday to have a competition. They use the Oxford Style of debate that is judged by experienced high school debaters. THE MODIFIED OXFORD STYLE 1st Affirmative Constructive - 4 minutes Cross Examination - 2 minutes 1st Negative Constructive - 4 minutes Cross Examination - 2 minutes 2nd Affirmative Constructive - 4 minutes Cross Examination - 2 minutes 2nd Negative Constructive - 4 minutes Cross Examination - 2 minutes Affirmative Rebuttal - 3 minutes Negative Rebuttal - 3 minutes 5 minutes Preparation Time per side Total Time - 40 minutes

  5. Ask yourself… • Am I eager for the exhilaration of academic competition? • Do I want to be successful? Do I want to learn the intellectual and argumentative tools necessary for success? • Do I like to argue? Do I often have strong opinions? • Do I like working with others? Am I a supportive team player? • Do I want to build my academic career with meaningful activities and awards? • Do I like to dig deep into topics? Do I like to feel like an expert? Do I like to do research on the internet? • Do I LOVE to win? Do I like to have fun while trying?

  6. Join the Debate Team! • Complete the brief application. • Write a persuasive and convincing statement explaining why you want to join the Debate Team and why you feel that you are just the right person. • Get one teacher’s signature of support. • Submit to Mrs. Chavez in room T-5 by Wednesday, October 13.
