  3. The federal government must consider the effects that federal projects and programs have on historic properties.

  4. Establish the Undertaking Does the undertaking have the potential to effect a site (if present)?

  5. THE SECTION 106 REVIEW PROCESS Identification:Find out through research and field survey if there are any cultural resources located on the property.

  6. THE SECTION 106 REVIEW PROCESS Evaluation: If cultural resources are identified we determine whether they “historic properties.”

  7. WHAT IS A “HISTORIC PROPERTY”? • A “historic property” is defined in 36CFR60.4: • A property (site, structure, etc.) that is eligible for inclusion on the National Register of Historic Places. • A historic property can be a historic or a prehistoric archeological site.

  8. Criteria for NRHP • Associated with events that have made a significant contribution to the broad patterns of our history

  9. Criteria for NRHP • Associated with the lives of persons significant in our past.

  10. Criteria for NRHP • That embody the distinctive characteristics of a type, period, or method of construction, or that represent the work of a master, or that possess high artistic values

  11. Criteria for NRHP • That have yielded, or may be likely to yield, information important in prehistory or history

  15. THE SECTION 106 REVIEW PROCESS Resolving Adverse Effect:If the undertaking will have an adverse affect to the historic properties, we must avoid, minimize, or mitigate.
