  4. What are backgrounds? • Space defined by floors, ceilings, walls, and windows

  6. Backgrounds help set the “mood” of a room • Add: materials, patterns, colors, and textures • Formal or informal • Calm and quiet or loud and exciting • Affect sound: soft, textured materials- absorb sound smooth, hard surfaces- don’t muffle

  8. Dramatic Backgrounds • Beamed ceiling • Mural • Carved woodwork

  9. Background Options • Light is uneven- colors look different • Way light strikes wall can make it darker or lighter • Doorways, windows, and fireplaces all affect the color • Each piece of furniture reduces the amount of background color • Neutrals, tints, or shades are easy on the eye
