Summary of Lidar BG - 1 • Donovan, O’Connor, Comstock, Delenoë, Preißler, and Seifert • Could discuss many different types of lidars: decided to focus discussion on elastic backscatter lidars • Sy matrix: • Most systems will be Poisson limited with off-diagonal being zero (no correlation between different heights) • Could validate this by collecting high temporal resolution data and confirming with autocorrelation or power-spectral analysis • Uncertainties in the overlap, which are “random” when considered over long time scales, contribute to correlated error in the lowest altitude bins • How to determine the calibration coefficient of the lidar? • Afterpulse uncertainties? • Dead-time uncertainties?
