  7. About Work Tschabalala Self is inspired by the cultural iconography of Black female bodies, mapping the points where questions of race, gender, and sexuality intersect. She sees bodies in their physical, social aspects, exploring the ideas of eroticization of Black femininity in arts and culture and social construction of racial identities within the frame of ideas found in Orientalist discourse. She is interested in printmaking because of it relationship to media and reproduction. She describe her art and style as an aestheticized compression; compression of time, space, ideas and form.  Her work is very personalised in a way because she grew up in a  female oriented home and that once she started to get away from that environment she realised that her identity and physicality affected people in ways I did not understand. Her project most importantly allows her to explore the relationship to her body and bodies which resemble mine. She makes art about black women for black women.
