  1. Modeling Multiplication of a Fraction by a Fraction

  2. The operation of multiplying two fractions requires us to multiply numerators and denominators. Example: 1/3 x 3/4 = 3/12 Which is equivalent to = 1/4

  3. When we multiply whole numbers we can model the multiplication to arrive at the answer. We can call this an array! 3 Example: 4 x 3 4

  4. We start with the group, in this case the second fraction, 2/3. 3/4 x 2/3 2/3

  5. Then we divide the square in the other direction to model multiplication by 3/4. 2/3 3/4

  6. How many small units are shaded under both fractions out of the total square? 2/3 1 2 3 4 3/4 5 6

  7. 6 small units are shaded by both fractions out of 12 total in the whole square. 2/3 3/4

  8. 3/4 x 2/3 = 6/12 2/3 3/4

  9. Try this in your notebook using different colored pencils: 1/3 of 1/4 =
