  1. Bell Work • In a paragraph, describe a time when you held a grudge against someone or when someone held a grudge against you. Were you ever able to work through this issue, or does it still exist today? Explain.

  2. The Interlopers

  3. Key Idea • Both history and literature are full of individuals who bear grudges, or feelings of resentment, against others. Recall, for example, the Montagues and Capulets- Romeo and Juliet’s warring relatives. In “The Interlopers,” you will read about two neighboring families whose ongoing feud has dire consequences.

  4. Role Play • With a partner, imagine a scenario in which a long-standing grudge exists between the two of you. Think about what your relationship once involved. For example, maybe you were teammates or best friends. Also consider what event led to your disagreement. Then role-play a chance meeting. How do you behave toward each other? Do you remain angry or make up?

Key Terms: Denotation and Connotation • Denotation: • The actual dictionary definition of a word • A word’s literal meaning • Discipline: the practice of training people to obey rules or a code of behavior • Connotation • Any idea or feeling that a word invokes in addition to its literal or primary meaning. • Discipline: unhappy connotations of repression and punishment

  6. Denotation vs. Connotation • Define the word CHEAP • List all of the connotative associations you can make with the word CHEAP

  7. Vocabulary • Interloper (n)- one that intrudes in a place, situation or activity • Precipitous (adj)- extremely steep

  8. Vocabulary • Acquiesce (v)- to agree or give in to • Marauder (n)- on who raids and loots

  9. Vocabulary • Pinioned (adj)- restrained or immobilized • Draft (n)- a gulp or swallow

  10. Vocabulary • Langour (n)- a lack of feeling or energy • Condolence (n) an expression of sympathy

  11. Vocabulary • Succor (n)- help in a difficult situation • Pestilential (adj)- likely to spread and cause disease

  12. Homework • Complete the vocabulary in context assignment for homework tonight
