  1. Warm-up # 1-Part of Me In this novel, Rose lies about her age and gets a job driving a bookmobile to small towns in her South Louisiana parish. One day she is halted by a roadblock in the form of an alligator stretched out across the narrow road. If Rose is 5 feet, 4 inches and the gator is 70 inches from head to tip of tail, which is greater, Rose’s height or the alligator’s length? Rose decides the best way to handle this is simply to wait for the gator to move on.

  2. Warm-up # 1-Part of Mecontinued Today farm raised alligator meat is a specialty served in some Cajun restaurants. If the chef buys 40 pounds for $478.00, what is the price per pound? Would you eat it?

  3. Warm-up # 2- Keeper of the Night Guam, the island setting of this novel, is about 6089 miles from Los Angeles. If you fly an average air speed of 500 miles an hour, how long will the flight be? (Round to the nearest hour.) After you watch two movies, one 150 minutes and the other 100 minutes, then take a two-hour nap, how much time do you have left to read this novel on the flight?

  4. Warm-up # 3—The Water Seeker The Otoe Indians in this novel were offered smallpox vaccinations, but let’s presume that 60% of the village of 250 refused, believing that vaccinations would harm them rather than protect them. When a smallpox epidemic hit the area, if the mortality rate (death rate) was 60% of the unvaccinated, how many Indians died? *Smallpox has been eradicated from the entire world since 1979, but the disease was responsible for an estimated 300–500 million deaths during the 20th century.

  5. Warm-up # 4-When Zachary Beaver Came to Town Zachary Beaver, at a whopping 643 lbs., is advertised as the world’s fattest boy, but actually, he isn’t. A group of DWJH students have the following weights: Maria 116 Jose 133 Amanda 98 Adrian 148 Alexis 148 Chris 161 Does Zachary Beaver weigh more or less than all the DWJH students? What is the closest representation of Chris’ weight compared to Zachary Beaver’s? a. 50% b. 1/3 c.1/4 d. 20%

  6. Warm-up # 5-My Louisiana Sky Louisiana has a long history of being battered by devastating hurricanes. In 1957, Hurricane Audrey ripped through Saitter, the fictitious setting of this novel that was based on the actual town of Forest Hill. How many years ago was that? Tiger Ann Parker, the main character, was 12 at the time. What year was she born? How old would she be now? ***Audrey was a surprise killer (416 deaths); landfall was predicted in 4 days, but Audrey picked up speed dramatically, and the very powerful hurricane hit that very night instead.[1] BONUS: The damages from Hurricane Audrey were $147,000,000. If $100 in 1957 is worth about $807 in 2011, then how much would the damages be in today’s dollars? ***The name Audrey was retired and will never be used for another hurricane.
