  2. Just what is a Comic Book? • Comics are simply the combination of Text and Graphics in order to tell a narrative • However a Comic is a highly flexible and easily understood medium, a language which is understood worldwide

  3. History of the Comic • The tradition of comic books has been around for over thousands of years, being seen in Ancient Egyptian Hieroglyphic tombs to Mayan Frescos found within Central America. • These ancient cultures utilised a system of looking similar to what we use today!

  4. Influential Artists • William Hogarth • Windsor McCay • Scott McCloud • Chris Ware

  5. William Hogarth (1697- 1764) • Hogarth drew from life, a caricaturist he depicted the honesty of both London’s Upper and Lower classes that helped to develop a tradition of satirical illustration in Modern Europe. • He was a pioneer of sequential art which was not that different to today’s political cartoons.

  6. Windsor McCay (1867-1934) • McCay was a gifted individual whom is now mostly recognised for his newspaper comic strips such as Little Nemo in Slumberland ( 1905-11) • McCay was interested in progressive action and the importance of the structure of scenes within a comic strip to depict actions and events.

  7. Scott McCloud (1960-) • McCloud has certainly been influential in the direction he has taken comics. He has been a supporter of the medium as a distinct literary medium and was one of the first artists to support Web comics, now one of the most popular formats for comics to date. • Author of Understanding Comics, he is best known as a comic theorist

  8. Chris Ware ( 1967-) • Chris Ware is by far one of the most enigmatic and misunderstood comic artists today. His work draws familiarities with everything from advertising, McCay to the way people think and see the world. • Ware is hesitant in using modern technologies and draws, inks and writes every part of his work, including barcodes!

  9. Research Project: • Selecting one of the above artists in groups of 3-4 students you are now required to being research into a particular Comic Book artist as specified in the Unit Outline. • You will be given the rest of the class time to conduct research • You will also be required to make a blog entry on the website of your findings on your artist.
