Activities: Grants to increase the profile and R&D capacity of Northwest Universities in energy technologies 40 projects funded (Joule contribution = £3M + matching funds of £5M) Catalyst for encouraging further investment Knowledge & support for NW energy community Joule Forum: university, industry and public sector network that arranges events & meetings to: influence and support regional energy policy inform and update members on energy matters encourage individual & corporate “best practise” provide opportunities for collaboration & debate

    11. Expert Organisation Concept: A Joule Centre Hub supporting three Centres of Expertise and Enterprise (CEE) Develop business clusters around the centres that drive and direct future research or can benefit from historical university research and its exploitation

Objective: Increase engagement between SMEs & university communities Increase technical capability & capacity in selected theme areas Reduce barriers for businesses e.g.. time to market and gain early market share Increase the competitiveness of the region Impact in terms of increased Gross Value Added (GVA) GVA = GDPGVA = GDP

Methodology: Accelerate the research & exploitation process Continue to fund research driven by the thematic centres & business clusters Market development activities to help remove university & business barriers Increase industry engagement Look at historical university research in the energy sector Embed Business Development personnel into the centres CPD in Exploitation, Market Development and Thematic Technology Generate additional funding and raise the Northwest profile
