  1. Chapter 6: Deviance in Sport Supplements, Scandals, and the Secrets of Baseball Presented by Jordan Clarke, Cassandra Corlyon, and Tessa Moncrief http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qscED3psy_U (0-36sec)

  2. Game Plan • History of supplements in baseball • Focus on specific baseball players • Biogenesisscandal • Future for the “All-American” game • Conclusion

  3. History of Supplementing in Baseball • Ancient Olympians and Romans usedsupplements for entertainment and economic gains • In 1928, the IAAF created the first modern anti-doping rules • 1991, steroids appeared on the banned substance list in baseball • Testing for major league players did not begin until 2003 • Mark McGuire- first suspected to use supplements in 1998, using androstenedione.

  4. Mark McGuire • Broke the unbeatable homerun record in 1998 with 70 homeruns • McGuire admits that he did use steroids off and onthroughout the 90s http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q7KdojQIc2M (0-40sec) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3STkQC8pVEE(10-34sec)

  5. Jose Conseco “Bad boy of baseball, and godfather of steroids” • Played for 16 years and on 7 teams, hitting 462 homeruns • Anabolic steroid and HGH http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W-y71Gf4Iew(3:50-4:50)

  6. “I would never have been a Major league caliber player with out steroids” “I tried to do everything possible to become the best player in the word, do I believe steroids and HGH helped me do that, yes”

  7. Alex Rodriguez, “A-Rod” • In 2003 tested positive for steroid use, and admits in 2009 • 2013 Biogenesis scandal, MLB suspended A-Rod 211 games • He was given a much larger punishment than the standard 100-game suspension for a second time offender http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kr8OKeH61g4(0-1min)

  8. BiogenesisScandal • Anthony Bosch, fake medical doctor at Miami clinic • Hundreds of pages of original documents from the clinic backed up the rumors • MLB launches investigation of Biogenesis • Dozens of other players connected to the scandal accepted sanctions • None of the players suspended today have failed a drug test

  9. Future of Baseball • Baseball operated under the assumption that “since everyone is doing it, let’s just pretend it’s not happening” • Everyone in baseball is now taking a stand against steroids • “Max Scherzer(teammate of Ryan Braun) believes suspensions “didn’t fit the crime” • Nick Markakis (Baltimore Orioles outfielder)-5 year ban for first offence

  10. Conclusion • Scandal has resulted in the biggest round of mass suspensions for performance-enhancing drug use in baseball history. • Would stiffer penalties — more than the current 50 games for the first offense, 100 for the second, and a lifetime ban thereafter — work? • “These guys that are doing performance enhancing drugs are taking away from a lot of other people that are doing it the right way. They are taking opportunities away and they are basically stealing.” – Nick Markakis, Baltimore Orioles
