  1. Addition Properties 4th Grade Math Mrs. Walker

  2. Vocabulary Say It! Addend Sum Commutative Property Associative Property Zero or Identity Property

  3. Addend Any number being added together 8 + 7 = 15

  4. Sum The answer to an addition problem 4 + 4 = 8

  5. Commutative Property of Addition The order numbers are added does not change the sum. 4 + 1 = 5 1 + 4 = 5 so….. 4 + 1 = 1 + 4

  6. Associative Property of Addition The way numbers are grouped when added does not change the sum. (5+2)+3 5+(2+3) 7 + 3 5 + 5 10 10

  7. Zero or Identity Property of Addition The sum of any number and 0 is the number. 8+0=8 0+8=8

  8. Whiteboards: Check what you Know! Complete the number sentence and name the property. • 19 + _____ = 19 • (5 + _____) + 2 = 5 + (9 + 2) • 74 + 68 = _____ + 74 • 542 + 0=_____ • (27 + 18) + 13 = 27 + ____________ • (15 + 7) + 23 =15 + ____________ • 84 + 61 = 61 + _____

  9. Practice In your Math Notebook: Math Book pg. 34 #s 8-13 and #s 25-28

  10. Word Problem Words Addition Altogether In all Sum Add Both Total

  11. Word Problem Practice: I have 30 minutes until I have to leave for school. I have to clean my room and fold the clothes before I can leave. It will take me 20 minutes to clean my room and 10 minutes to fold the clothes. Do I have enough time to do both chores before I leave? If so, does it matter what order I do them in? Use the Commutative Property of Addition to prove your answer. Do I have enough time? 20 + 10 = 30 YES!!! Does it matter the order? 20 + 10 = 30 10 + 20 = 30 NO!!! Now, you write a word problem using the Commutative Property of Addition to prove the answer.
