  2. What is Abortion? • Abortion is the intentional termination of a pregnancy after conception

  3. Types of Abortions • First trimester • Methotrexate & Misoprostol • Mifepristone & Misoprostol • Suction Aspiration • Second trimester • Dilation& Curettage • Dilation & Evacuation • Induction Abortion • Third trimester • Induction abortion • Dilation and extraction

  4. First Trimester • Methotrexate & Misoprostol • Methotrexate is a chemical taken orally or by injection that causes the placenta to break away from the wall. Then misoprostol is taken orally which causes contractions and leads to the expulsion of the placenta. • Mifepristone & Misoprostol (RU-486) • Mifepristone is a chemical like Methotrexate that causes the placenta to break away from the wall as well as contractions. Misoprostol given by mouth causes more contractions leading to the expulsion of the placenta • Suction Aspirations - This procedure involves the use of a specially designed syringe to apply suction or a hollow tube called a cannula. The cannula is passed through the uterus and the tissue is removed from the uterus 9 week old fetus

  5. Second Trimester • Dilation & Curettage • This method uses a sharp instrument to remove the developing fetus from the uterus. This type of abortion is typically preformed in the Second trimester • Dilation & Evacuation • This procedure uses a combination of suction aspiration, dilation and curettage , and the use of surgical tools. • Induction Abortion • This procedure uses a variety of medications and procedures to prematurely start labor. The woman goes through the whole process of labor before the fetus is able to survive outside the womb. 15 week old fetus

  6. Third Trimester • Induction Abortion • Dilation Extraction • A surgical procedure in which the baby is turned around so it is feet first. Every part of the baby is then pulled out except for the head, and an incision is made in the skull and the brain is suctioned out.

  7. Dangers of abortion • Severe bleeding • Uterine perforation • Tearing of the cervix • Blood poising • Reproductive tract infection • Pelvic inflammatory disease • Chronic pain • Infertility

Abortion statistics • In 2005 1.2 million abortions were preformed in the U.S • 18% of U.S women obtaining abortions are teenagers • Girls ages 15-17 obtain 6% of all abortions • Teens ages 18-19 obtain 11% of all abortions • Teens under the age of 15 obtain 0.4% of all abortions • Women aged 20-24 account for 33% of all abortions • Women aged 25-29 account for 24% of all abortions • 47% of women who have abortions have had at- least one before.
